Today we were driving up the A38 ( a very busy, single lane, twisting road) coming towards us we saw a very young girl on a flighty looking pony that was jogging (dark pony, rider in dark clothes, no high viz) then..... and you just won't believe this!.......we saw that the pony was being led by a woman on a bike (presumably the mother) who was on the inside - and then.....it gets worse!.......the woman had a toddler sitting in a basket on the back of the bike!

Horrendous scenes of terrible accidents flooded through my mind - what if the pony had been spooked by one of the coaches or lorrys that was passing, dragging the woman on the bike and the toddler flying off under the wheels of a car.

It beggars belief, it really does

I do wonder where some parents sense goes alot of the time.

At my old yard, another livery used to sit her 3 year old on the companion pony she has with a hat that is for an adult. The 3year old can't ride, has never had lessons, has no sense of balance.

They used to lead it round the farm track (a mare) with the child on right past a paddock that has a gypsy stallion in it and about 12 mares.

The stallion and his herd used to fly at the fence full pelt and charge along the fence with the little girl screaming, the pony rearing and squealing and the mother shouting at the girl to stay on.

Still even that is no where near as stupid as what you saw.

I feel this is a challenge: neighbour went out on her reliable hack (she is a fairly insecure rider) with her two boys on their own horses (the boys are about 4 and 6 so I would have been tempted to keep a close eye on them if not keep them on the lead rein, but they were off) and very young baby (5 months) strapped into a basket seat on the shetland who was on the lead rein. They were happily going along when the older boy said "Look mummy Jinny is under the pony!"...apparently the basket seat girth was loose, the saddle had twisted all the way round and the baby was hanging with its head inches from the pony's hooves, all of which the mum hadn't really noticed. How's that?

The more I read of these posts with idiotic people being let loose on these poor horses, the more I think that there should be a common sense test before anyone is allowed to buy a horse.

Honestly - do these people just have no brain cells at all?

Can I ask which bit of the A38, purely being nosy!

Sounds ridiculous to me!

I can't quite remember which bit but we were travelling from Taunton to Glastonbury and onto Shepton Mallet to the showground. I think it was getting near to Glatonbury that we saw them.

Perhaps a little test before they are allowed to have children as well?
