Some of you might remember I was having some difficulty keeping one of our Labradors from running off. I can happily report all is now sorted.
Anyhow, brief background, after losing two of my dogs in very quick succession last year I was lucky enough to rehome a 3 year old show Labrador and a few weeks later another Labrador working lines bitch of the same age. Had some trouble with the second one (Jessie) being a dedicated escapee but that is now resolved thank goodness. All details here in this thread if interested on further background https://forums.horseandhound.co.uk/threads/please-help-if-you-can.806741/
The elderly man we bought Jessie from, claimed to be rehoming her as he was off travelling to see some of his children in far flung places (right in the middle of covid - but whatever!) We have dedicated retraining Jessie and setting things up here to keep her safe from roaming etc. We, and a friend of ours who works and breeds field trial dogs, are convinced she was a rogue field trial dog that the old guy was eager to get rid of for obvious reasons.
He phoned me yesterday, claiming he just wanted to know how she is and I assured him she is very happy and settled and we all love her very much and she and my other lab get on really well. He reminded me when we got Jess he had also given Jessie's son to his own son to look after while he was on his travels and now his son wanted to keep the dog he had bred from Jessie, fair enough and your point is.? Conversation went along the lines he missed having a dog and was looking for a similar type of dog to Jess, either a small working spaniel or Labrador (why working lines, if you claimed last year you never worked Jess?). I wished him luck with his search for a new dog and thought no more of it.
He has just texted me saying if we decide to breed from Jessie can he have first refusal on one of her pups as he now regrets getting rid of her! Stupid, slow on the uptake me, last nights phone call was obviously putting some feelers out to get Jessie back! Damn cheek of the man and why would he want her back anyway as he obviously didn't care enough about her to just sell her on to anybody without any background checks. Plus she is now spayed and even if she wasn't he would be one of the last people I would let a pup go to! I am not even going to bother to reply, he has just made me very cross on her behalf.
sorry - long rant no point to the post - just flabbergasted at the nerve of the man! Now even more curious about exactly what he did use her for, was she just a breeding bitch, was she actually a good working dog that he now wants back. If she was, she certainly lost the plot with her training when she first arrived poor little thing!
