And I think he's younger than they say. I bought a 6 month old colt foal off some traveller friends and they brought the mare as well, so put them in a stable walked the mare out and gone, he's settled down and eating a little hay and of course I'd given away all my foal slips and went to buy one all sold, but they said they didn't carry many, so monday it is. Lenny (my oh has named him) hasn't been handled at all which I find unusal, as most travellers ponies are. So in the next couple of weeks have to get him passported, microchipped and wormed. But he's lovely, my oh thinks I've bought a dog, but thats what he thought about Kestrel, till I was offered £8000 for him, turned it down 2 years later he had a heart attack, horse not OH:D:D.So when I get a decent camera, I'll post some photos.

i had a foal delivered with his mum,the mum went back home and we closed the top the stable door for the night.also i left my shetland in the yard with him so he could see him.

the next day he seemed fine and then suddenly he took it upon himself to jump out.
he was very wary and had not been handled but it only took a couple of days of little rubs and tipbits and he is the most friendliest boy now.

i hope yours is still in tomorrow!

Yes bless him he will be as we put a rug high over the stable door. It's from the top and we have a wide plank over the stable doorAnd tonight my OH said I think you may have bought another good one, as if I need telling.:D:D:D Never bought a bad one yet, just never sell them on so he's mine till the day he dies or I do then they all go th WHW, and I think at 62 I've got a good 30 years in me.:D:D:D:D

mmmmm well for a starters it's illegal to sell a horse without a passport, so he should have been passported and microchipped before he even arrived!

Regarding age, I've known a top warmblood breeder to wean at 3 months! (though the said foal did then go on to suffer a multitude of illnesses! survived fine though, but needed a fair amount of vet trips over his first year) how old do you think yours is? If very young I'd advise supplementing with milk pellets or similar.

Good luck.x

I bought what I thought to be a 6month old foal of travelers, turned out she was only 6 weeks old, i had to bottle feed her woth milk and all sorts of stuff.

shes turned into the most beautiful natured pony, really friendly and loves everyone, luckily she never got ill as a baby and she is 5 now xx

Yes I know it's illegal to sell a foal or any other horse without a passport. But I'm talking about Travellers and they don't follow as most people know the legal route and yes I know he should have been microchipped at birth, but he's in my hands now and I shall get him passported, microchipped and have him gelded roughly about Xmas/Jan time. Just have to get a foal slip on him and get him use to me. And please don't preach about passports, most of the wild stock don't have passports or microchips, and I have a horse that is older than his passport says.

Wow! It is my absolute dream to get a foal! It will be so amazing to watch him grow up and witness everything with him! I hope you really enjoy him! :D :D :D :D

I wasn't preaching, just advising as there seem to be alot of people still around that don't know this. Regarding your other horse being older than the age on his passport... this is one of the reasons why they brought in compulsory passporting and combined microchipping.

And I agree that from that element of the community I am not surprised that it wasn't chipped, though I was shocked at the amount of passports I did see exchanging hands at a horse fair last year!! Then there was a dispute over ownership of a horse on the site and the horse was scanned to confirm ownership, it was chipped!!!

Glad this little horsey has you now and am sure it'll be fine, though if you are concerned it is very young you could look at using something like foal assist, developed to supplement vitamins and minerals to foals suckling on mares producing large quantities of low quality milk, or in this little mans case, no milk! http://www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk/whatproduct/stud/foalassist.htm

Good luck again.

It is quite common to wean at three months - research showed that the mares milk declined in quality at this stage and that the foal drank for comfort/habit rather than for a need for food.

My mare can't wait to get rid of hers from about five months - the only time I've seen her self load onto the trunk. She's a great mum.

Its not just about the mares milk its about what she teaches the foal whilst the foal is with her. Just make sure you have some good young companions to put your foal out with to play and socialise with. Good luck :D looking forward to seeing the photos.

I've had weaned babies here from 3.5 months, better come to me than to the auctions. They've been fine.

Not a single one of mine have passports, a couple have brands, and only the TBs have tattoos and microchips.

Good luck with Lenny, enjoy.
