The rescue people rang last night to say that they had a black, 4 year old greyhound bitch in for re-homing.... just what I had asked for

I am going to see her tomorrow morning, to find out whether she gets on with Talisker

The only problem is that if I do take her now I will have to pay kennel fees (£7 + VAT per day) for her until after MK3DE, as I am not sure it would be fair on her to take her home, then put her back into kennels for 4 days when I am away. I don't really want to pay out that much if I don't have to, so I will talk to the rescue people tomorrow - I did originally say to them that I didn't want one until after MK when I first contacted them.

Ooooh sounds lovely, have you got any family she could lodge with until she can come home?
Im sure the rescue could hold her for you as its in her best interests to get a good home and not be disrupted.

I have to admit I am a bit obssessed with them.... yep, she did 47 races at Oxford and Swindon, she was in Ireland before then. She is 5 years old in July

, hope we can get the MK weekend thing sorted out though

if she is in a greyhound rescue centre (BRGB) then the owners are paying for her to be in kennels until she is rehomed. that is if they are responsible owners

I would hope that the rescue kennels would agree to keep her for perhaps a donation until after MK. It would seem foolish to risk losing a lovely home for this bitch for the sake of a few days, and I agree it would be unfair to take her and then put her back in kennels . Good luck, I hope it all goes well when you meet her.

Thanks

When I spoke to the home co-ordinator last night she was pretty definite that I would have to pay regular kennel fees from when the greyhound would be ready to leave for her new home (12th May) until I could take her away (27th May) so that would be £112 + VAT = £131.60 altogether if I wanted to take her, plus the re-homing donation

I can see their dilemma - they ask for a donation of around £100 when they re-home a dog, but it costs them approx £450 to take a dog in, neuter it, and keep it until it is ready to go to a new home. So naturally they are going to want to re-home them ASAP

BUT it is a little frustrating when I clearly told them from day one that I would be away, and couldn't have another dog until AFTER MK3DE...

FWF - thats a really good idea, I did ring my mum last night but she has two dog shows on the weekend of MK3DE, and my sisters second baby is also due that weekend! So unfortunately they aren't able to help... I would have asked a friend, but she is the one competing at Milton Keynes

Well I hope they can compromise in your case. £450 seems quite a lot for their costs on taking a dog in. Apart from speying what other costs would they have incurred - just curious really.

I think that is the 'average' figure which they quote - I know that quite a lot of the dogs they take in have dental problems, injuries from being on the track, or from being abused (such as having their ears cut off to remove the tattoos) or from being a stray

They also microchip each dog before it gets re-homed (not hugely expensive I know)

I have to admit when I had posted earlier I did sit back and think 'well people pay hundreds of pounds for a pedigree puppy and don't bat an eyelid, why am I whinging about £200 or so'

Surely getting your new dog and settling him into his new home is far, far more important that MK3DE?

There will be other events, however hard you've worked for this one..........

Oooh good luck

Have you got a nice boarding kennels locally where
she could board for the 4 days? Greyhounds are used
to being in kennels so 4 days wont harm her.

- Im not competing, I am grooming for my friend, and I committed to that 2 months ago. I do not let my friends down. I told that to the rescue people when I first approached them - they chose to contact me before my specified time scale

Believe me, I love my dogs and they are the most important thing in my life ATM but no, getting a new dog is not as important for me just at the moment as not letting down a valued friend when I have given my word to her

Yes that does put quite a different slant on it and I see your dilemma.

Fingers crossed that you work something out.............
