In September. Shocking.

Ponies bought in bivering away earlier, so after a extra double feed and rugs later, all happy and well again.

Cobs however, are fine, as per normal.

Anyone else finally rugged?

Its been cold and miserable all afternoon here, rain seems to have stopped now, drying up a bit. Was going to go down earlier and put a LW on the cobs as they don't have much shelter/////will see how the weather goes!

Both turned out in LW with a neck and madam is in wearing LW stable rug with neck!!!!! Think we are in for a shocking winter mind you most of this year has been pretty dire weather wise, currently sitting by the fire with winter PJs on stuffing my face (over done it a bit though Haha) definitely winter :(

Yes MW's on all four. I made it quite clear to them that they are wimps but they shivered, tucked their tummies up and made sad faces at me, so I gave in.

Buds is out in his 200g rug! First time he has had a rug on since march! The forecast for the next 24hrs is horrendous, 60mph winds, torrential rain and cold temps so he will be glad of it :) I feel better knowing his is going to have the rain off his back xx

I was going to as they only have a hedgerow for shelter in my highland's field but he was also munching away happily when I turned up and had toasty pits and ears so I let him be. If I rug him he ends up soaked in sweat and he hates coming in. :(

Fat Tbx out naked in wind and rain. Old pony boy has lw on. Is about 13 degrees he but rained all day. Am hoping it may help fattie shed some flab ( she was as warm as toast though!)

My two Are in transition of winter Coat growth. Should I still rug? For now I was thinking LW to keep the rain off mainly and when we get ice I thought MW with necks as by then They will have full winter coats and will be packing on pounds with adlib hay. Newbie to rugging only ever rugged with LW.

Is it personal pref or individual horse that requires certain rugging. Is it if you have a flipped horse that will need thick rugging??

Yup, Olive had her no fill turnout on for the first time yesterday and has a 100g stable rug on tonight! Love it when it comes to jammies time (very sad)

I normally leave mine until they require it, for me, coat growth isn't an issue with 2 of them, as they'll be clipped, though both have shedded and quite fuzzy now. Last year I didn't need to rug until October....today however, both were shivering like mad within half an hour. So rugged they got. They've been happy all year without until now. Most other years, have been fine until October without.

I decide purely on each individual horse. :)

If the horse is cold, it gets a rug or a warmer rug.

If the horse is too warm, it gets a lighter rug or no rug.

I bought my mare last year on the first of October. We were wearing vests and it wasn't until November I needed a rug! Now she's out in her lighter middleweight (200grams) and is still miserable!

Every single horse/pony is an individual. The weather conditions in YOUR area are not necessarily the same as someone else a few miles away. The microclimates in every individual field/yard across the country are all different too.
My 3 year, 4 month old New Forest is currently in a no-fill rain sheet. I am looking for a warmer rug in her size (100 - 200g) as we are now having minus temperatures here during the night, along with very changeable weather conditions. She is growing and teething right now, so I would rather rug her as required rather than stuff her with hard feed to maintain her condition. She's in a 100 acre field, so plenty forage in the form of old, mature pasture, but she is using a lot of energy in growing at the moment. It is better for her health to wear a rug, as this will conserve energy for growth rather than keeping her warm than it would be to give a native hard feed. :)

Mine has had his 200g on for the past 3 weeks down here :( took it off day before yesterday as it was so sunny, went up today and he was all tucked up and miserable again so put it back on :(

Mine is naked! It hasn't stopped raining since about 1pm yesterday, winds have been horrendous! I have no shelter or stable to dry him off and the forecast is grizzly til Tuesday! What can I do with him???
