We moved yards at the weekend after 20 years (nearly all my adult life). Our old yard is on the market and we had an opportunity for most of us to move to a new (well, one that was sold a couple of years ago and the new owner is now re-opening) yard all together so it was too good to pass up on in the circumstances. The whole of the old yard went out for a meal on Friday, then we all moved our stuff and set up the stables Saturday and moved the horses yesterday. Our old YO was there to wave us off and we were all in tears. It's daft as the horses are all still together (and have settled really well) and we're all with most of the same people but I'm still really sad. That yard has seen me through so much in my life.

On paper, the new yard is better, same stabling and turnout but with an indoor school, horse walker, XC course (that's in the process of being re-built as the old one hadn't been maintained at all for the last few years) hacking in the fields when the weather is good and less busy roadwork but I'm still hankering after the old familiar. I'm sure I'll settle soon.

It's sad to think of moving off. I still think about my first yard as its where I learned to ride, met so many wonderful horses that taught me so much, an excellent instructor and friend and its where I met Tilly (my Highland I've had 17 years).

I'm sure you'll all make lots of happy memories together in the new yard.

I can imagine you'll be very happy at your new yard but I think it's lovely in a way that you're so sad to have left your old one as it shows how happy you were there. When I moved in January I just felt relief to be gone as I'd ended up so unhappy there. I called in to see somebody the other weekend and was really struck by how much I felt that I just don't belong there anymore. It shows I made the right decision but it's sad in a way to feel like that as I was there about eight years in the end and there were some good times there too.

I know the circumstances for you moving are different but hopefully you'll be able to make many more happy memories in your new place. And you're going to be very lucky to have that lovely indoor when the winter comes!

I was bereft to have to leave the little private place I rented for 4 years, I can't imagine how upset I'd have been after 20!

Yes, it's good that we're all going together and YO has said we're all welcome back if they haven't sold it and we don't settle. The only issue with the indoor is I no longer have an excuse not to ride!
