Puzzled by a thread on facebook where the owner kept banning people I liked the page and wandered round to see what all the fuss was about.
Apparently it is about someone riding a 31 year old horse exactly the same the same as something younger and refusing to understand at 31 it might be a good idea to allow him a little less energetic life.
I was very polite, and suggested perhaps Fred had "earned" some retirement now, pointing out I have yet to see a horse who pines when it stops work (having run a retirement livery for 15 years I have a little experience of older horses...).
I agreed with the BHS welfare officer who had assessed the horse and suggested light hacking would be fine, but whammo, within a minute of her reading it I was banned, named and told I was jealous...
Last week I got banned from Minxy Morris ' FB page too for suggesting they allow a vet specialist decide his treatment or not.
So in all the years of being on forums, a week of two bans, it seems if you don't like what you hear even if the majority of people agree, ban them and cover your ears. Whatever happened to good old fashioned horsemanship, where an old horse could slowly ease off and then retire ending it's days with friends ?
The MM business has gone deathly quiet, due no doubt to the replies on everything from here to FB, but I do fear for horses if this is the modern way of horsekeeping, ride them until they drop dead under you, or throw money at something so clearly deformed nature would have made a decision for it.
psssst.... I do hope this doesn't get me banned from here too.....though I'm rarely here nowadays.

Fred deserves a nice retirement, unfortunately he is still being ridden by his owner, there is a recent picture on Grace's fb page :(

I agree wholeheartedly with you, and what a rebel getting banned twice lol! :D

I think it is a sign of the times though to a degree, in modern society people are used to getting what they want when they want a lot of the time and aren't prepared to put their own wants and needs on hold for a while if it doesn't suit them. Selfish and ignorant, yet thank goodness there are those with plenty of common sense and feeling for horses still around.

I think someone worked out, from the name on his passport, that he wasn't actually 31, more like 23 or 26. TBH I’ve never seen a DWB of Fred's size that would still be capable of that work, or still have that muscle tone and appear to be in such good condition at 31 years old.

Even if he is younger than 31, he's still clearly an old man and struggling. Some of those videos show that he's unsound, some show him being chased over jumps and losing his footing and he seems to trip quite regularly, etc. The workload and the types of things those people are making poor fred do, are entirely inappropriate.

I can't get over how ignorant and arrogant the owner seems to be, and she's clearly not worried or embarrassed about fully identifying herself, her personal problems and the actual address of where fred is stabled - it was all in that thread last week.... so bizarre
