Just seen a lorry advertised, a 3.5 t
Carries 2x middle weight 17.2hh 's and still cruises along at 70 mph!
Wtf!!!
Maybe it should be illegal to drive a 3.5 on a normal license just so people learn the facts and don't endanger themselves, their horses and other road users!
Mini rant!

Someone on my work intranet is advertising a 3.5t and says it easily carries 2 x 16.2s. Wouldn't it be massively over the payload? I have 2 16.2 IDs and was always under the impression there was no way on this earth that they'd both fit into a 3.5t?!

I don't believe you could carry 2 x 16.2s in normal circumstances unless they were about as wide as a sheet of paper.

I guess it might be almost possible if each was finely built (say 550kg each) and you had a light weight driver - SOME boxes advertise a payload of 1.2 tonnes. You would need no more than half a tank of diesel and NOTHING else on board. Might help if both horses could be trained to poo before they go on?

I asked the payload of a 3.5 ton advertised on FB (yes, I know :p )

Got the reply "I did state on advert, not to ask lots of questions, I have no idea of the payload, I dont even know what that even is! Sorry if I appear thick! If your interested come and look, its cheap as chips too"

and then (not from lady advertising it I have to point out) of "they mean what weight can it hold love x just put on how many horses it holds and there size x ******* sake what ya want for 1750 x"

There's really no hope is there. Don't know what the payload is, don't understand what I mean by payload, and who cares because it's cheap :p They've apparently been carrying 2 16 handers in it.

Ha my horses would be nowhere near then because they're both built like brick****houses!! And as for the pooing front, I'm firmly of the opinion that they save everything up before they go in the trailer and then cover every available surface in droppings and wee.

Crazy. We're about to advertise our lovely little lorry and upgrade to an HGV - she's 7.5t and we don't feel carrying 2x 17.3 horses is appropriate. For this reason we would never DREAM of advertising it as such, and we are well informed ourselves therefore will advertise responsibly. If they sold this to an unwitting and unknowledgable owner, there could be a VERY nasty accident.

We have both taken our Advanced Certificate of Equine Transport (as well as appropriate HGV licenses) and it's a course I very, very highly recommend for anyone involved in the transport of horses from pony club mums shipping daughters little neds out to a local show, to people traveling longer distances, it is very informative and you will learn a lot in just a couple of hours, not expensive to take either.

I see those on FB a lot ... spoke to a nice man from Alexanders horseboxes at the Royal Highland and he said there was absolutely no way our 16.1hh and 17hh would both get in a 3.5t box.

I think people forget that the rules and maximum payloads are there for the safety of the animals and people in the boxes, it's not just an inconvenience that you can get round because the horses physically fit in the box!

I could get 2 x 17hh in my 3.5, (have tried and they will fit) but I wouldn't even start the engine to take them anywhere.....despite the 1280 limit I have, will only ever take 1, except possibly adding Tiny Fuzzy

My box will also cruise easily at 70, but I would never do that with even TF in it.

I do despair of some of the advertising going on :(
