Hey everyone - just thought i'd post a quick update on me and Star. As most of you may remember we've been having some lamness issues since last year - treated a spavin - then gone lame again. Well today we had another trip to the vets and the news isnt good
frown.gif
Star can no longer compete or really do anything and she is only 12yrs old booo hooo hoooo
frown.gif

Outcome being is that the spavin in her right hind we treated in March is not changing and the treatment is not working. Its basically one of those long occuring spavins which will never get better. We could continue treating it every 2months but as the vet said eventually the treatment will stop working and we'll be no better of. He said she could eventually be sound enough to light hack, which stars doesnt like - so looks like my beatuful girl is destined to doing nothing. Vet has said we can breed from her so that maybe the plan next year as it's getting too late now. Why does it happen to her, she's still young and loads more to do
frown.gif

We will be claiming loss of use for her after doing another tildren treatment as apparently the insurers will prob want that done anyway just make double sure. Sooo what do i do now for my lovely girl???? x

So sorry to hear this. Is she well bred? Would be reluctant to put something in foal just because she is "broken", sorry.

Know how you feel - my mare only 10 had a different problem but the outcome was the same - I found a really nice home for her as a brood mare and she is now in foal. Heart breaking for me but at least I can go and see her and hopefully she will have lots of years breeding some show hunters.

I would say yes but sadly i dont know her lines...what else would you suggest doing with a mare that doesnt like doing 'nothing' - what's wrong with foaling from her just because we can???

Because if she has a conformation weakness that has caused a problem for her, why risk passing that onto something else? Sorry but I would just treat a "normal" mare like a gelding in the same situation
frown.gif
Sorry, just my opinion, but I dont think having a foal will stop her being fed up with doing nothing.

Sorry to hear that but s solution could be turn her away completely over the winter and see what happens. You may find that with 6 months in a field doing nothing, letting everything settle down she may come sound.

My mare is now 12 and we claimed LOU for her when she was 6 due to her having navicular syndrome in both front feet and spavin in her right hock. We claimed the LOU and turned her away thinking that she was going to be a large expensive pet. However she came sound and for the past 3 summers we go out and compete most weekends (2006; Trailblazers SJ champs, 2007 BD Area Fetival)

I personally wouldnt breed from her especially if you are claiming LOU, there could be a chance this could passed on to her offspring.

It is a catch 20/2 as to whether to claim LOU now and then eventually find she comes sound - but then we only have till March to decide whether we do or not. If we miss out now and she doesnt come sound then im stuffed!! She's been turned out for some time now - and will be from now on but the vets not holding out hope for her to come fully competition sound at any point!! Fingers crossed tho a...

The vet has fully assesed her and in his opinion he can see no reason why not to breed from her.

I guess there is always a breeding debate about not using horses from good lines etc. However, your mare looks lovely...nice conformation, lovely jump - Im sure she would produce a lovely foal!! You may want a reminder of her too? A lady down our yard has just done something similar with her 8yr old irish cob type (absolutely no superstar breeding) who has been lame with a tendon problem. Although she only cost her £1000, she was everything she ever wanted in a horse...temperament, abililty...good sort of 'everyday riding horse'. She purposely didnt want to breed from a renowned stallion from super lines, as to her she wanted to keep the temperament more than anything.

My mare doesnt have any breeding lines to her and I would be in two minds to breed from her purely because she's a bit nuts. Not sure if i'd want that passed on!!

How awful.

A little horse my sister rode had a similar problem. Spavins in her hocks. She was retired and has bred 2 lovely foals. I think Star would throw a really nice baby. And being well bred doesn't mean they won't have problems. That mare was by Welton Apollo and out of a Ben Faerie mare, whose full sister was on the young rider eventing squad a few years ago.

Hey - my mare had bone spavins in both back hocks and had surgery and thank god has recovered, and is totally sound (touches wood!!!) ....so sorry that it is not the same with Star, lovely mare. Mine got it at 6 - which is why I would never breed from her as I expect that the reasons for it occuring would be genetic. Surgeon said she would be fine, but I would feel sooooo bad if offspring also had something wrong.

I suppose as she is older, and it is only one hock, and you choose a stallion with good lineage (in terms of hocks!) then you would be totally fine! Wish I was in the same position in terms of breeding. Would throw a lovely foal.

I think Star has lovely confirmation and from what you have done with her has proved she is a good competition horse - put her in foal now you have 4 weeks till end of the season hun xxx

She may never breed a superstar (she might dont get me wrong) but im sure you will have a lovely foal in a few years that you can definately compete xx

What a shame hun, im so sorry to read this
frown.gif
i think putting in foal is a good option if your vet thinks it is ok. Agree with Stacey in that id do it now as youve got 4wks of the season left. xx

I would defo put her in foal now if you can afford to, get a good vet on your side and it shouldn't be a problem. Also you might find she is unsuitable to breed from (although this is unlikely) and then you'd have wasted 8 months waiting for nothing!

Feel free to PM if you want some advice on the breeding etc as I'm in your area and have been through all the stresses myself!

Oh

have been keeping any eye out for an updates from you and this isn't what i was hoping to read

Thanks hun

You will still see me on sunday tho, im jump judging all day hehe
tongue.gif
you best go clear now...

Oh you dont know anyone thats lost a ring recently do you i.e at wendys etc? x

Oh no, I am really sorry to hear this
frown.gif

I would try and get her in foal this time if you have some thoughts on a stallion. After all, then she is 'doing' something for the next 11 months. Plus, you never know, with a long period of time off, she may yet come right!

Well the reason we were not going to do it this year is cause the 2nd lot of tildren she is having next week - the vet said said it's not adviseable to breed at the same time, so were are doing this treatment so the insurance will be satisfied we have tried at least before claiming LOU then breed next year...

Is that understandable? lol

Ive already heard of some people that may be able to take her as a field companion and i can put her in foal which will obviously save livery cost etc

Sorry for you bad news, every horse owners worst nightmare

You mare looks a nice sort in the pictures. I would chat with the vet about any chance of her passing this on to her off-spring and breed from hert (If that is what you want) if the vet is happy with that.
