After our Rott was diagnosed with cancer at the end of last year, and given a guarded prognosis (post amputation osteosarcoma), we went about looking for a pup - he arrives next Wednesday. We werent at all sure we would still have the old boy by now but we certainly do, he's on amazing form and absolutely fine on three legs, I keep meaning to get a video of him haring around the fields.
Anyway, decision was made to feed new pup raw in the hope that we can help give him as long and healthy a life as possible.
So being a 'barf newbie' I took the easy route and placed an order with Natural Instinct, got a bit carried away and couldn't actually fit it all into the freezers when it arrived! So we have started slightly earlier than planned with Kaiber, I had originally thought I wouldn't change him over given the fact they can take a few weeks to adjust but he's doing so well that we thought we would give it a try! So far so good - he loved his chicken carcass piece, and has also had 250g of beef tripe this morning (OH didn't get the info about starting with just chicken!). He will have carcass for tea again tonight and I am defrosting several slabs of NI chicken mix so will keep him on that for now - as a 40kg Rott based on 2.5% body weight I am aiming for about 1kg of food a day, is that about right? So was thinking half a pack of NI in the morning and chicken carcass at night to start with? Puppy will do a few days on his existing puppy food when he arrives just to get his first jab over and done with, then will swap to the NI puppy food and I've got some wing tips for him to practice on.
Couple of questions though - how much ti feed - pup should mature to 25kg, I've seen figures of 10% adult weight and 2.5-3% adult weight?! Which is correct as that's a huge difference!
Also, know I need to start introducing offal etc, so am I safe to buy just some kidney and maybe liver and plop one in with their NI gradually? Or can I rely on NI for the time being to provide enough offal disguised in their minces? Ultimately I would probably plan to swap to one of the more cost effective suppliers but initially the ease and convenience of the NI is a huge bonus as with an elderly dog with issues and a growing pup I really don't want to mess their diet up!!
Any help/advice appreciated!

Also - I've seen a few places that they should be getting less food when fed raw than kibble - well, kaibs has never had anything LIKE a kilo of kibble?! He is a very 'good doer' so should I account for this in advance? And feed slightly less?

I started out with NI as it is easy and complete. Not all their foods contain offal though and many people say you dont need it. Depends what model you follow. A personal favourite of mine was the Working Puppy as it had a nice mix of protein sources and some offal - it doesnt have to be fed to puppies either, the only difference is the size of the grind ;)

As for amounts, Ive found i feed more than the recommended ratio tbh. Be aware a lot of dogs lose weight to start with on raw too. A couple of my collie bitches are around 12-14 kg and get 1kg per day to maintain their weights.

Hmm ok thanks. The working puppy is what I have in bulk for Nelson so that's handy!
We're your collies on kibble before? Did they eat recommended amounts/more/less when on that? I've always said if I were to feed kaiber recommended amounts of dog food he would be the size of a house! Can't afford him to be losing weight at this point tho as need his immune system etc to be at it's best.

yes they were on dry food and always fed significantly less, other than one young bitch who couldnt keep weight on at all. She is the reason we switched to raw and she is finally a good weight but to maintain it, needs a 1kg a day. To get her weight up she was on 1.5kg a day of mainly lamb. the meats that will put weight on are lamb and duck. chicken is probably middle of the road and turkey and tripe are low in fat. I have 6 BC's and only one of them is on less than 1kg a day. You have to go with what you see in front of you though and mine are very high energy/active dogs so perhaps not the best comparison. One thing I do remember though is my pup last year got the squits to start with on the working puppy as she found the offal harder to cope with (as many do, which is why NI dont have it in all the foods). She had a few weeks on the plain chicken to get used to raw then went on the working puppy and did fine thereafter. Hope that helps and your dog thrives and is ok x

I have a rottie x who I raw fed from 4 months. He was on about 1kg a day and still is.
One thing I have found with him is even though he is a cross he has matured very slowly. he is now 2 yrs 5months and only now has he just bulked out and stayed bulked out as opposed to going bulky, taller, leaner in that order every few months. He looks like he is fully grown now.

He sits at 40kg, lean (but that could be his cross not 100% what he is) but a very muscular dog.

Also you comment you have a new pup yet we have no pictures......................................................................(not just any pup either a rottie pup if I read correctly-my fav ;) )

As should be the case with large breeds - it's the rocket-fuel levels of protein in some of the dry 'puppy' and 'large breed' foods which causes dogs to shoot up way too fast.
My own breed traditionally went through a really fugly stage of legs, ears, head, body not matching at all :p right up until 24 months and later...but nowadays you see eight month olds looking like pony-sized adult dogs. Nowadays dogs from puppy class are taking CCs and Best of Breeds because they look 'more mature' and 'better quality' than dogs much older, which used to be unheard of. Only stores up problems for later IMO!

Thanks all - sounds like about 1kg is about right then - he will be thrilled!
No, not a Rott, as we felt would be too raw when we do lose him to have another one, honestly no Rott could ever be as awesome a pet and best friend as he is. So went very far removed and he is a portuguese water dog! Will post many pictures when he arrives!

You will get used to looking at your dog and then adjusting the food accordingly. Learn the feel of your dog, can you feel ribs easily without having to push your fingers through layers of fat? can you feel hip bones? can you pinch only skin over the shoulder? is there good muscle tone?
As far as the puppy goes it is always better to grow them slowly.
Good luck with BARF

Toast, will check that out thanks.
Satin blaze yes, will try and keep an eye on weight, just particularly paranoid with the old boy as weight gain is potentially disastrous for his remaining hind leg, and weight loss is a bad sign with the threat of dormant cancer cels hanging over us, so just trying to avoid the inevitable panic of him losing/gaining any weight!
He's had 750g of tripe mince and about 250g raw chicken carcass today and absolutely loves it - and this evening's poo was healthy looking and solid so I am going to finish this pack of tripe then do a few days chicken to consolidate.

Congratulations on the new puppy! How exciting :)
My rott bag is on raw. She is 1yo now and she never has more than 800g a day, she weighs in at around 40kg. I prefer her to be on the light side of lean as she needs to grow slowly and mature at her pace. I now feed by eye. I think rottis do tend to be good doers and I am extremely conscious of not adding extra weight for those big joints to carry! Always a bonus when they can live off fresh air! :)

Interesting thanks emm0r, he's certainly enjoying the change so far as his bowl is decidedly fuller than it used to be! He's having 1/4 tub (250g) of natural instinct in the morning with 2 x 70g chicken carcass pieces, then 1/2 tub in evening with two more pieces of chicken, so a grand total of around 1kg, of which 750g is NI minced stuff and 250 is chicken prices. Hopefully that sounds about right?!
