Feel a bit crap now.

Got the little mare I put deposit down on Sunday (subject to vetting) vetted today. I text owner after asking how it went, as I couldn't be there, and she said back saying 'okay I think. Will message you later'. So alarm bells start ringing in my mind.

Vet then calls me and says that she couldn't do a proper 2 stage vetting as the facilities there just weren't appropriate. She said the mare's feet were horrifically overgrown (which I noticed on Sunday and made sure they got them re-done before I came to get her) but vet also said she had heart bar shoes on which screamed out to her that horse had previous cases of laminitis. I didn't notice the heart bar shoes being honest as when I picked up her feet it was in boggy field and literally for a split second to see if she lifted them. Vet also said that because she was a bit underweight she suspects that she may have cushings. She also said that the mare wasn't happy with her being at her back end and kicked out a couple of times! This is a big no no for me as I have a mum who isn't horsey who may have to handle her, and the way our boxes are set up at the yard, people will have to walk behind her a lot.

Vet then went on to say her heart and gut sounded fine, and she seemed in good health at the moment.

Ahh this is such a pain! She was going to be the pony I was hoping to get my confidence back on, but I don't want to buy her if she's going to cost me a bomb in remedial shoes, medication etc and be kicking out at people!

Sometimes I just feel like giving up :(

The facilities needed to do a 2 stage are a flat area & a track but heart bar shoes would be a no go for me especially if the feet had been allowed to overgrow.

Heart bars, skinny? did you try her or is she sold from the field?

Yeah there is hard standing there but it wasn't big enough apparently. And yeah I only tried her out on a wee walk down the road though. I knew her feet were bad, and I just assumed she was a bit underweight because she's 15 and lacking muscle. Plus it's been a pretty bad winter and grass just coming through now.

Ahh! Yeah at least we know now. And that's true, on to the next one! Just going to go back for lessons until I find something!

Well another sad tale but there are SOOO many horses and ponies for sale cheaply at the moment that I'm sure you'll find loads to try!

Different experience to you, but I saw a lovely mare I fell for, went back with an instructor for a second viewing and she noticed mare was unsound, unlevel from behind, lack of topline and muscle and basically overpriced for what she was going for! I was gutted as my heart said I wanted her but it was a good job I took someone experienced with me who picked up on all those things my inexperienced eye missed!

I have been querying some horses but they all seem to be going for £3k or £4k! But from scanning the adverts, the cheap ones appear to be cheap for a reason! Good luck with your hunt :)

That's a shame, better luck next time though!

Hope you have better luck getting your deposit back than I have with the one I had vetted who failed at 2* being hopping lame. Two months later and I still have had no luck...

I was just going to post about deposit actually. I gave the seller £100 in cash, but got a receipt. I have 2 witnesses who were there who know I wanted horse looked at by vet. I also obviously have the vet who can back me up in saying they're not selling what they described. I have a text from the seller yesterday saying 'no problem, send me your details' when I asked for the deposit back, but I've still not got it in my account? How long should I wait before asking again?

It's not my money, it's my 86 year old gran's money, which they know. Quite immoral of them, in my opinion, if they don't send back deposit. I know it's only £100 but still. It was subject to vetting, and the vetting showed problems which were quite serious, so it's not as if I just pulled out.

I would walk away. Sorry didnt see your post about the deposit ring them again today and if you have no luck go down there and get it, I would not be leaving until it was in my hand.

Tbh you shouldnt have had to pay a deposit getting a horse vetted is enough of a commitment to prove your serious, was it there idea to pay it?

Give them a polite quick call to ask when they sent it over as it hasn't appeared in your bank yet. Most bank transfers come the same day but others it can take 3 working days. I wouldn't panic yet.

I paid a £200 deposit. Stupidly didn't get a receipt, as I transferred it, but have a text from the seller saying she'll refund it. At first it was she was waiting for her card reader, then the activation code...then silence. I've also emailed her- silence.

I'd give them a text this evening just to check. Make sure they had the right details too, it turns out I paid over £200 in bills to a randomer rather than my housemate, as she's too scatty and disorganised to check her account every time until it was £120 from each of us for the bills.

I hope you get things sorted out

I have had one mare vetted at my yard she was a lovely looking girl looked great at yard which was very bogie so a couple of days later boxed her up took her to mine and she failed her vetting on her feet which was not so apparent in the mud of her yard but i was so pleased i took her to a place that i could get her on hard standing

and yes i got my deposit back

Okay I'll give her a call tonight. I know the seller is a student nurse so will have to wait til she's out of placement anyway. I think the seller herself is quite genuine, she's a totally beginner and admits she doesn't know much about horses and didn't know about previous laminitis, it's her experienced friend that im wary of, and I think she would be the dishonest one and tell her not to refund me. Just got that horrible feeling.

And the only reason why I put down a deposit was because I really liked her, and they had sold her previously but had had their time wasted by them, so I thought putting a deposit down would give them and myself peace of mind before the vetting. Quite silly of me now when I look back on it.

Fingers crossed I get it back!
