I am obviously mad,
My mother was handed a litter of 6 pups. The lady they came from was advised god knows how many times to at least have one of her dogs ' done' either the male or preferably the female
Needles to say it never happened, when pups where born she decided they where a new designer breed and she'd get hundreds for them.

Well 5 weeks in she knocks on my mums door, apparently the mother has 'run away' and left the pups.( read ,she is fed up of them, and mums probably been passed on).

My mum has had them at the vets, all but one seem healthy. She has found homes for them when ready to go.

One of which will be with me

So we needed a name for a female cocker spaniel cross elkhound. And for fun any guess what their designer breed name may be?
I will post pics when she is ready to come home, off on my jolly pops for a week

So the bitch owner was warned about that it isn't always so easy to let your bitch have puppies, and then when the puppies is about 5 weeks old, reality catches up with her and she dumps them on your mother! :( Well done of your mother to be able to take care of the puppies, hope the puppy that isn't healthy gets well. About guessing the name of the designer breed, Elkcock? Nocker? Or to really make it sound purebred, Norwegian Spaniel?

Hope you have lots of fun with your new puppy when you get to take it home.

:)

ETA Sorry can't think of any name suggestions for your new puppy, have you tried looking at sites about/with names, like e.g. nordicnames.de/wiki/Main_Page?

Thanks for the link, will have a look.

Yes that about sums it up.
I think she knew my mum would take them rather than leaving them where they where so to speak, and without to many questions asked really.

What a cock-up, well done on your mum for taking them on and hope the poorly one revives.

I wont buy into the designer names as its everything I hate , god knows what they are going to look like but at least having got rid of the bitch history wont repeat itself. Lets hope she and the pups have all got loving homes.

I'm with Dobiegirl on this one. Cocker x Elkhound:mad: What were the owners thinking of. It beggars belief. Grrrrrr

Oh no as far as we are bothered they are mongrols end of. Just as she was going to sell them as designer breeds I was curious go what name they could possibly have.

The little ill one they think could be blind and her heart isnt 100 % but my mum will keep her if the vets think she won't suffer any.

As far as I know all pups are going to friends( friends of friends) my mum has insisted that they keep her upto date.
The worst thing is all but one pup is female.

:D:D:D
Well done to your mum for stepping in to help them. Both elkhounds and cockers can have eye problems, and I expect it would be silly to hope the parents were health tested.

I didn't think about that MurphysMinder, have checked on Optigene's list with available gene tests and both Cocker Spaniel (English) and Norwegian Elkhound can have the prcd-PRA gene (http://www.optigen.com/opt9_test.html), so if the parents is not tested, then it is possible that they carry the gene and for that the puppies have inherited it. :(

So? Regardless of what sex the puppies have, with sensible owners the likeliness for any true accidents to happen is very low, plus there is the option of surgery.

About the designer breed name, I haven't been able to find any, perhaps she couldn't find any existing designer breed name either? Perhaps she couldn't come up with an own name suggestion for her designer breed either? There is for example a club called the American Canine Hybrid Club, last time that I read about it, they had a "breed" list and if your cross breed is not on their list, then all you need to do is to invent a name and pay them x sum of money, and voila, your breed cross will appear on their cross breed list with its new name. Today I only looked at their breed list, and I couldn't find any Cocker Spaniel (English) x Norwegian Elkhound on it American Canine Hybrid Club.com/Breed list, note that to them Cocker Spaniel = American Cocker Spaniel.

For example I've also looked at these two sites dogbreedinfo.com/hybriddog/designerdogskennelclub breed list and bestfamilydog.co.uk/cross breed list, without seeing a Cocker x Elkhound cross, maybe I missed it? Although I did notice that on the last site, they listed Collie x Poodle = Cadoodle, so perhaps you should be happy if this cross doesn't have a name.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone with a Cadoodle reading this, but I prefer breed names where the words have a meaning. E.g. Finnish Lapphund might sound weird to others, but Lapp is the old Swedish word for a Sami person (a large part of northern Sweden is still named Lapland, Linnaeus wrote about his trip to Lapponia, and did note that the Sami/Lapps had their own type of dogs), hund is the Swedish word for dog and in Finnish the breed is called Suomenlapinkoira, Suomen = Finland, lapin = Sami/Lapland, koira = dog, so either way, it is a Sami/Lapland dog from Finland. Why the KC doesn't call it a Finnish Lapinkoira I don't know, perhaps it has something to do with that there is also a Swedish Lapphund?
Anyhow, those words does mean something, on the other hand, I did see an advert in my morning newspaper last year for Bullshit puppies, and that word means something, but why anyone decided to call their cross breed puppies that instead of mongrels, I can not understand. But then they had crossed an English Bulldog with a Shih Tzu...

Yes of course they will be spayed in their new homes when the time comes.
Just meaning if she had of kept them all but one was a girl so again breeding potential for idiots.

Maybe she thought she would start a new breed ?
Which wouldn' t suprise me at all.

I mean preloved has Hairless dogs on at the mo, that really shouldnt be hairless, I think it is one of the small breeds.
But im guessing they carry a defected gene as in the "skinny pigs/ rats/mice" and whatever else they can find to skrew up.
