really didnt think id post again but for pity sake people......should they be out wat food wat rug how long out omg wat did you all do last year, they are horses herd animal they live out naturally, they may need rugs but nt many unless we clip them,,,,, omg common sense, iv asked questions on here for a second opinion but to be honest i dnt think i need one, if most people spend there days worrying over snowballs in feet, what rug...etc well maybe i dnt need that much advice after all.. n these silly questions get multiple replies haha serious ones get zilch i give up !!!!!!

i have to agree with u a little to be honest lol :)

however a small point. i didnt do this last year as i am a new horse owner but even i know that horses are horses and they survive more then we give them credit for.

i actually agree alot with the serious questions not gettin answers but the silly ones getting alot. its not fair or helpful:(

Gosh nice to know you were never someone new to horses at one time then OP. So what if people are asking for help over what you consider beneath you? Don't bother to read the threads!

I'd rather people asked away than felt awkward about asking because of threads like this. We are ALL learning, it's a lifelong journey. Some may be further along the path than others but that doesn't give any of us the right to poo poo anyone else. To me it is being an intelligent, caring and diligent horse owner asking questions. Scaring people off of asking these questions might just cause a horse or pony harm in some cases.

At least they care enough to ask. Would you rather they didn't ask and ended up not getting it right?

If they are asking an honest question I see no reason to shoot them down in flames.

^^^^ This!

*Remembers asking how to feed sugarbeet and being shocked that you are meant to soak it*

Glad I didn't ask on here but then again, had I not found out.... kind of important, if ignorant, question :)

Well, although I am horrified at the OP's use of (lack of use of) grammar and spelling I can't help agreeing with her sentiments.

I KNOW that people are first time horse owners but what happened to researching what is required before making the purchase? A little reading never hurt anyone and even a basic book like the Pony Club Manual of Horsemanship will answer many of the questions asked on here.

People need to ask basic questions sometimes. Much better that they ask too many than that they don't ask and their horse suffers.

There are better ways of doing things as well. If it wasn't for this forum I'd still be doing things the way I was taught as a child but I find I'm always learning new things.

Hmmm you can always not log on you know.

Horsemanship is nowhere near the level it once was and questions which seem stupid to us may be genuinely important to others. I learned so much off the Great Dane Owners forum as had no idea how complex they were psycologically despite having dogs for years maybe my questions there seemed stupid (eg how much to feed.... do I need to rug....) etc.

OPs post and lack of tolerance is exactly what is wrong with this forum atm, and why so many useless and needless pages of argumentative bullying often follow.

I have been with horses for over 45 years and still am a long way from knowing it all, but I would ask my questions on a different forum to this after seeing some of the witch hunts.. or should that be witches hunting?

Its a forum and its what it is for asking silly questions. I ask silly questions, I have had my horse for 8 years and shes fit and well, but sometimes you slip into habits and want reassurance that you are doing things right etc. Until I had Samba I always just put rugs on in the field no headcollar etc and now listening to your stories on here I realise how stupid I was and how lucky I am to have a pony like Toffee who just stands there while I do anything I want.

And if you know everything then you are a very dangerous person indeed.

well i have been around horses all my life (except 1 yr) and before i got my present horse i had always kept mine in a field, no stable. they were also little toughies so only got fed cubes (known then as nuts!).
when i got my horse he had to be stabled and needed all these different feeds. now i'm from the days where it was just sugar beet, bran, main ring and nuts, now it's cubes, and loads of different kinds of mix.

i've had to 'relearn' how to do things but i still ask at the feed store for nuts and main ring!

so what i'm saying is that everything changes all the time, new products and different weight rugs, that's the other thing, used to only be new zealand rugs! it's taken me a while to get the hang of rugging and stuff but it's down to reading other peoples posts/replies, you google anything and it's a maze of info which confuses people.
at least on forums you can ask the specific question and get a variety of answers.

if asking about rug weights and things like that is boring then don't read or just help that person out, surely it's better they ask and help the horse than not ask and neglect it (not on purpose)??

I think it's good that people post even if it seems silly or trivial, especially for those that are new to ownership etc things are so much more different these day's then when I started with horse's...many years ago.
I ask daft questions too...so what?
I think it's good to get different opinions and answers everyone does things differently that's life.
:)

Wow, is this modern English??

I find it funny people get wound up enough by a forum to actually make a post criticising others for asking questions!

My Grandad was a very well respected horseman and although 96 when he died he had always said, that if he lived till 100, he would never know all there was to know about horses and was still learning.

He would never of been critical of even the silliest question asked of him but would smile and answer honestly. That's because the man was a real horseman.

how lovely and a gentleman too who probably understood the need for 'conversation'

Not too mention things change, horses get older need different care etc.

Oh and I'm sorry but all this crap about horses are horses and can live in the wild. YEAH and loads of them die!!! not too mention the best herds are huge, have loads of woods to keep warm have choice of forage good god the list of the differences between successful wild herds and captive horses is huge. The amount of horses coming down with colic is one proof that we cannot just treat them as wild horses

also to the OP some of the questions that you've asked may have been trivial and obvious to some members but i doubt anyone said to you that it's a stupid question etc etc.

so before you start critising what others post why not realise that you ask questions with obvious answers!

Not to point out the obvious here....but isn't asking questions of a source of knowledge and reading the answer, one of the many forms of research available to us in this day and age? Much like going to a library and asking the librarian where you might find a book on basic horse care...;)

That is PRECISELY my point:D Asking on here leaves you open to sometimes wildly inaccurate advice, if you had checked a respected source and still felt the need to ask on here you would have some idea of who was talking rubbish.

Sounds like an amazing man. And wise words.

Nothing wrong with asking questions, if you don't want to answer don't. Remember there is a wide range of ages and experiences on a public forum so try to not be so critical, if it bothers you that much then don't read it.

"Wildly inaccurate", or a range of different ways of doing things, from which you can draw your own opinions and methods, rather than just following the opinion of one author of a book like a sheep? ;)

Again, just my opinion, but I believe experience is a very valuable tool and if you can hear the experiences of many different people and their reasons for doing them, you have the potential to expand your knowledge much faster.

Besides which, if anybody was to post something truly "wildly inaccurate" in response to a question on here, there'd be plenty of people who are quick to shoot them down in flames :P

I get asked daft questions all the time. But the only reason I know they are daft is that I have knowledge that others do not;), so I wouldn't begrudge someone asking.

Also, some people prefer to ask a person rather than a book... and not every situation is covered by books anyway. So there's no harm in someone asking questions.

I would worry if someone was using this forum as their one and only source of information, but there is no harm in asking here along with consulting other sources.
