We're going for a total hip replacement. Poor H is home a bit groggy and depressed, her hips are very bad. The only problem is she weighs a whopping 39.6Kg and an average skinny, small lab weighs 27Kg. I have her on a bit od a diet and exercise but obviously not enough so we're home with a huge bag of'obesity;

food and going back in a week to be weighed!

Will do me good too as will be taking her for as much exercise as I can.
Poor pet, thanks to all of you who replied previously as it spurred a vet visit. Anyone's dogs had a hip replacement?

Yikes!! Is she able to do much exercise being that overweight and with bad hips?

its important your exercise is little and often and consistent. dont take her for an hour one day and five mins the next (i know thats a little extreme but you get what i mean!). Getting the weight off is very important, we see a lot of overweight dogs, particularly labs, and it makes such a huge difference to hip and elbow problems. You will prob find she does a bit better even just losing some weight. I assume they wont do the op until weight is lost? One thing you can do is instead of giving her treats, give her vegetables, raw or cooked. It helps to fill them up and they're ot fattening. we always advise owners to do that. They can have fruit too, but go easy on the fruit as it can be sugary and give them diarrhoea! Another thing you can give her to help with joints is a cod liver oil capsule daily in her food (just the normal ones that humans take, but dont give her high strength ones, just normal dose.) One of those daily is fine and may help ease her joints. (dont pay a fortune for the veterinary ones, just go to holland and barrats!).

Nope, no op until a bit of weight loss. She can swim lots (nearly everyday) as we are 5mins from a lake and have a pond down the road from us and this seems to work well. We are aiming currently at a 6Kg weight loss as she is a stocky lab naturally!
That's a good thought kat_g will investigate!

Best of luck with your weight loss programme (the dog's obviously). Hope it goes well and his op can be done quite soon. Swimming sounds like a great idea.
My aunt's dog had both hips done a few years ago, and it gave him a new lease of life. It was the best money they ever spent.
