My Muck Boot Colt Ryder wellies are giving up the ghost after three years, which is a good inning for a wellie you use for yard chores and riding.

I got them from the yard’s “free sh1t” pile, so they owe me nothing but I love them. I see new ones retail between £120 and £145, but I’ve seen that Grubbs also make a riding orientated wellie that I can get for £84. But if they won’t last as long as the Muck Boots, then that’s not actually saving money.

Anyone have any views on Grubbs? I had never heard of them.

My grubs split within a few weeks and the things were lethal on some surfaces.

I’ve got some Cotswold wellies and they are amazing. Hard wearing and warm and comfy. They were a little heavy to begin with but I’m totally used to them now.

Are you saying they are making the Colt Ryder again? Yay…although the price, eeek.

My first pair were called Muckboot Tynes, £50, and lasted around 7 years I think - ages, anyway - of constant daily use for walking and riding. Then rebranded as Colt Ryder and £80 or so - those lasted about 3 years. And then they disappeared from sale.

I managed to buy a Bnib second hand pair on ebay, and they are still going strong 4 years later, but I’ve only used them for riding now, to make them last.

Never wanted to buy the Grubs Rideline as my OH bought some Frostline and they split within 6 months.

ETA I’ve checked and yes, they are for sale again. Blimey at the price, though. And will they still be at the same level of quality?

My most recent Grubbs didn’t last long, they used to, but the last pair started leaking after three months. Would sadly no longer recommend.

I bought some Grubbs frostline in a sale to replace an old pair of muck boots which had finally died. Grubbs were very comfortable but leaked at the seams straight away. Returned and replaced only for the replacement pair to do the same. There were then a lot of problems with the return and refund, all down to admin at there end and I think it took about 6 weeks for refund.

Never! You should definitely wear all the colours.

I try to wear as many as possible at any time.

No, no, I think this saddle might be beyond 'all the colours' in any sensible way, but I am looking forward to it, even if most of my hacking buddies may not want to be seen with me in public.

My 3 year old Colt Ryders have done amazingly well, given I have two horses on DIY, and they do all riding and yard duties.

This thread is suggesting that I should probably stick with what I know. I am far too lazy and disorganised to swap between riding and yard chores boots, especially when I might muck out a horse, ride a horse, then muck out the other horse, then ride him, etc., so I really need an all-singing, all-dancing boot, and the Ryders have been really good at it.

Agree. Plus really comfortable.
Cross fingers though that they haven’t messed with the quality, though Muckboots in general still have a good reputation for lasting well, I think, so hopefully should be ok.

We get a lot of pairs of grubb boots returned to us at work with them failing after a few months. I’m unsure why they still take them in tbh.

I didn't realize either that Colt Ryders are back until I saw a post a couple of months ago. I was worried they might be like the flimsy replacement they introduced at the time they discontinued the originals so I contacted the company and they assured me it was the originals back so I got myself a pair and so far so good - apart from the price. But if they last I don't mind as they are so comfortable.

I'm weirdly excited to see your saddle now 😅 if my husband gets his wish and we end up back in Glasgow I'll hack out with you with my bright blue tack.

May not be of any use to you unless like me you take size 7/8 in wellies, but mine came from Sainsbury's mens dept - after more years of dog walking, horses ;and gardening than I can count I am still wearing them.

Are the Colt Ryders ok in late spring/early summer or do they get too hot?
I need a pair of wellies for warmer days

I’ve always been fine with it, though they do really come into their own in winter.

My OH finds them too hot in summer. If you specifically want some for summer I’d maybe go for something else. Late spring/early summer would be fine I would think…depends whether you normally have cold feet or not, too…

For me I never found a good replacement as a comfortable riding and walking welly (partly due to narrow calves) - the best walking welly so far was gumleaf, but you can’t ride in those. It’s great not to have to change footwear between riding (hacking) and yard work, as OP said.

Cheap wellies from local ag merchant.

I bought some riding wellies once, think they may have been Grubbs. Awful things and I sold them on.

I have Grubbs Highlines & Frostlines & both have lasted over 3 years. Worn daily for mucking out a walking to & from fields. They are warm & super comfy. The Highlines have a great tractor tyre tread which is really grippy.

I swear by Aigle neoprene with lambs wool insoles. Mine must be about 5 years old now.
I have neoprene-lined Aigle wellies. They are my second pair, the first lasted 8 years. They are a shocking price now but if they last they are better value than 3 pairs of cheap wellies per year, which is what I was going through beforehand. It's the Vimes theory of boots :)

For some reason Grubbs crippled my feet, I just get cheap ones from my local at place and so far they've lasted me 3 winters

My Aldi ones have gone 18 months which is impressive for me. They are super comfy too. Theyre on sale now at Aldi £25.

My most recent grubbs both split at the heel in under 4 weeks.. really disappointed as I've loved them previously 🙁

Got Skellerups as a replacement and I think they're fantastic! Comfy on long walks (up to ten miles), feel really secure on slippy surfaces and are generally fab imo

Which ones do you have @Jinx94 ? I love my Skellerups! I just have the Red Bands but several years of work on our stone/hard yard have meant I've worn the tread down - they still don't leak/haven't split! I'm thinking of getting some quattro or quattro sport skellerups so interested to hear what other people have.
