Hi in 40 years of owning Welsh cobs this is my 1st time I had one with skin problems on he legs like this I try all different thing change bedding and feed he’s had allergy test come back fine in one of the picture there’s a spray and a shampoo. The vet gave me to try. I’ve been using it but I find it is actually making it worse. Has anybody else seen this or know what it could be? It’s not fair on him, he’s only a yearling he had a very bad start he had pneumonia and he got scooped with grand 3 ulcers

Is his immune system compromised?

Are you feeding him something to support this?

How wet and muddy is his grazing?
He immune system is all fine

Yes he having something to support this

He field is not very muddy or wet he were mud boots out everytime

My vet has done all test and try all different thing he now seeing a specialist in the next few days

Pictures might be helpful, or what the shampoo and spray actually is so people will know what the vet has tried already.

There are a fair few skin problems that can show up on the legs and none of them have the same solutions!

It won’t let me post photos but the shampoo and spray is called zoncoseb

Okay so the zincoseb seems to be a drying formula. If that is making things worse I would suggest going the other direction with something highly moisturising. Something like udder cream, or a friend used the farriers formula mallenders and sallenders cream. Her horse didn't have mallenders/sallenders, it was dry and scurfy skin, but it did help.

That won't help figure out what the actual problem is, but it might give him some relief. A blood panel isn't a bad idea. Or look at the diet in general and make sure he is getting a good balancer, and skin support, so omega 3, oils and fats in the diet.

My mare had something that looked very similar a few years ago. It was almost like rain scald but her skin and hair peeled off.
She was in the middle of a lami bout so I think it was to do with all the lying down/sweating as she had a full winter coat at the time.
Vet didn’t come out to look at it but I sent him photos and he prescribed an oral antibiotic and a wash (that was used for pre-op preparation, can’t remember name but not hibiscrub)IMG_4074.jpeg

Okay so not an allergy, not mites or lice, too high up to be mud fever, not hyperkeratosis. The shampoo/ spay combo is antibacterial and not helping, I am unsure if a fungal problem would be helped by zinc and salycilic acid? Would be a weird place for fungus to thrive anyway if he doesn't have a problem with scour or anything.

Hard one! Not surprised you're stumped. Do let us know what the specialist says!

I do know a horse that had not similar looking, but similarly puzzling skin problems on his face and the only thing finally put it to bed was regular steroid cream. A face is a very different surface area to both hind legs though so I hope it doesn't come to that!
