My 6yo Welshie still acts like a 3yo. I mean, he has obviously matured a bit but jumping-wise I just dont know what to do. He can jump beautifully, in lessons he's perfect but as soon as we go into the ring it all goes wrong. I find we're very inconsistent and even when I get there on the right stride, he then sometimes bunny hops it or lands in the middle of a spread. He only does this say once in a round, but it seems to be almost every round!!
He's a terribly honest horse who never refuses but for some reason as soon as we go into the ring its as if we've stepped back to his first time out! He's not spooky at the fences, yet clears them by miles which then mucks up our striding in related distances. Everybody says he's simply still a baby. Of course we get the odd clear round but more often we're getting 4 or 8 faults. Ive never had any problems with any of my horses, they've all found jumping pretty easy and natural so Im not really used to having faults like this all the time! Its not even like gridwork or pratice would help since in pratice he's fine.
Do you think he still hasnt grown up yet and finds competitions still a little mind-blowing? He is a cocky bugger, full of presence and character so I realise he'll never be a simple quiet ride but when are we going to have consistent calm rounds?! AGHHHHHHH.
