Im sitting having a nosey at my mares passport and was wondering if anyone knew anything about welsh D breeding. There is a lot of llanarth and quite a few Scole. Is that good bad or indifferent?

Llanarth is Len Bigley's breed line, as well as fronarth... In my opinion the BEST section D line. Stocky old fashioned type... Google 'Llanarth flying comet' which was, i believe his foundation stallion

Ooooo thats exciting maybe my pony is posher than I thought. I will google away now. She also has "Nebo Black magic" a few generations ago.

I think all welshes have nebo black magic in them my lad has him on both sides, he also has a llanarth as his sire and most llanarth cobs seem to be chunkier

Mines a grandson of ebbw victor out of a nebo black magic mare and people say he's a proper stamp of a section d, chunky with lots of knee action which is great for showing, not so great for dressage :( I adore him!

Welsh Cobs with Nebo Black Magic in the breeding are two a penny...like Binky01 said he was a VERY popular stallion!

Llanarth is a very popular, successful breeding line...not a breed line I generally get on with but they have some very nice cobs :D

many moons ago my sister and her husband used to work for the original llanarth stud with miss saunders davies and her sister, len bigley was a little strappling! 'd's have changed a lot since then. we have one taking him to royal welsh next week all the way from up north it will be good to go home.

Im curious why do you not get on with them?

Well I certainly can't speak for all of them, but in my experience the Llanarth bred cobs I've dealt with have all had quite firey temperaments, whilst I think they are fabulous, especially in the show ring, I just don't seem to get on with them

Thornyside x Thornyside tend to be a bit bonkers too.

I have had a few Thornyside types, as long as they are OUT of a Thornyside mare they seem mellow..but BY a Thornyside stallion direct, a little HOT

I must say, personally, EBBW VICTOR was a great stamp.

She can at times be rather opinionated!!!

Ooo Yes Ebbw Victor is a very good stamp indeed

Thorneyside X Thorneyside bonkers...really? The Welsh Cob has some Thorneyside on his sires side...I've always found Thorneyside to be good solid cobs with a nice even temperament. Just goes to show one persons experience of a blood line can be totally different to another

I really like a Thornyside mare, very nice temp.and anything out of her isn't an issue.

Whilst we're here full of welsh enthusiasts....

What about them? :)

I'm not the most knowledgable, I have to go back 3 generations before I recognise any names there  but once I get there you have some very good breeding there.

Doing some quick searching, Taybog looks to be a very traditional stock sort of cob, whereas Kilcobben looks a little more modern in build...but I can't offer much more than that.

i must have the exception to the rule. the chestnut in my signature has Llanarth Lloyd George as his grandsire on both sides. He's prob the lightest built Welsh D you'd ever meet!

my little one takes a Medium saddle with a TB tree and looks like a TB in the body when he's hunting fit, but he does still have a decent amount of bone - he is so untypical in build, but he has got the truly firey nature and must have some strong Arab relations in the past as he has a really dished face for a pure Welsh - always getting asked if he's Arab - bloody obvious he isn't when you look at his proper cobby legs.

my old lad is out of a mare by Llanarth Braint. He is built like a brick out house. Proper old fashioned type by Maesmynach Flyer.

Oh, and both of them have Mr. Nebo Black Magic in their pedigrees - he got around a lot!

Nebo Black Magic comes up in both of mine's pedigrees as does Pentre Eiddwen Comet. As it is, they are totally different stamps and types.

My Chestnut mare looks similar to Star's chestnut... She's lightweight, nervy, and speedy.

My bay is stocky, quiet and steady (at the mo!!)

I love looking at the old pictures on the allbreedspedigrees website!

I've never looked at my Welsh D Filly's breeding, but have now with reading this post.

She's no nebo black magic ! Well might have if you go further back than 5 generations.

She's EBBW victor and lots of fronarth on sire's side and lots of thornyside on her dam's side.
It means little to me I must admit, the only Welsh D stallion I've ever heard of is Nebo Black Magic.

But from what I've read above, her breeding isn't bad. Her sire is stunning, if she turns out even half as nice as him I'll be happy x
