Welsh D final height?

Hi guys,

Just wondered if anyone could give me any advice on this one....
I'm the very proud owner of a 20 month old Welsh D gelding (registered name Bushbach Tommy) who is currently standing at 14 hands at the wither. I've had him 12 months tomorrow and he's gone from 12 hands to 14 hands in this time, and a 4'3 rug to a 5'6 rug too. He didn't have the best of starts coming to me at 8 months riddled with rainscald and fairly poor. I can't work out how to upload pictures to this thing but he's really filling out at the moment and still bum high.
His dam is Bushbach Kath and sire is Garnfach Gary, I have found pictures of his sire and damsire (Geler Ryan) but nothing about his dam.

Basically I'm asking for opinions on what size he may get to? I'm 5'10 and could really do with him hitting 15 hands :/He's very chunky so weight carrying won't be a problem, I just don't fancy riding with my feet round his fetlocks!

Also if anyone has any knowledge of any of his family and/or the heights they reached please get in touch!

do the string test it is fairly accurate if done properly measure from the floor to the point of elbow and from the dent in the fetlock joint to the elbow add the two together and if done in inches divide by four if in cm leave it
148cm is roughly 14.2 and a bit 153 is roughly 15hh and 158 is roughly 15.2hh
 
I'm not too sure about his breeding, but some do mature early. My section D hit 14hh at 20 months also, she was also about 12hh when buying her as a foal.
She's now rising 5 and still 14hh - I still live with the hope she's gonna grow some more lol.

Others mature late, I think it's just luck of the draw.

I'm only 5'2" so no big deal for me but at 5'10" you may have to consider riding really short :D lol x
 
My part bred welsh was 13hh as a two year grew to her mature height at about 7 when she was 14.2hh. My full D gelding I bought as a 5 year old and he was 15.1hh and hasn't grown any more but has filled out a lot. The PB is a TB cross so not sure if that has made a difference in her maturing later?
 
My Welsh D is 6 and he's 14.1hh (and a peanut!), he's got a huge deep chest as he was a stallion for 5 years and was gelded a year ago so he takes 6ft rugs - 5.9ft ones are just too tight on his chest. He's a big 14:1hh though and people are always surprised when I tell them his height as he looks a lot bigger. I'm 5ft5 and don't look too big on him as he's fairly chunky so it spreads my height well :)

He didn't fill out fully until last year, he was still quite gangly until then.
 
My friend's Welsh d was 14.1 at 12months and is now 16h (yes and not pb Welsh). Another friend had one 15h at 2 who finished at 15.3h. So I would say 14.2-15h max. Depends a bit how bum high he looks right now. Welsh d's tend to go up then fill out up to age 6 ish. My 4 (rising 5) d was 15.2 in November and expect he will grow a tiny bit more up but has loads of filling out to do.
