Me again and another post about saddles!
I just wanted to talk saddles again before I shell out alot of money!

What saddles do you have on your welsh D's and did you find it difficult getting one?

Ooo and what saddle do you thinks best for the typical D (flat backed, no withers)

Your so lucky!!!

Next time I get a horse I will study it's back to make sure I can get an 'off the peg' saddle!

Trouble with mine is when she was plump saddle fitted fine, but now she's as fit as a flee with no withers it's much harder!
 
Not a saddle recommendation, but one of these pads really help (with a saddle that fits of course)...

I used one underneath a treeless saddle on a wide flat backed middleweight (not a D but a horse of similar build) and he went like a dream.

I have also used it under conventional saddles and it really does work a treat.
 
I have a Kings Richmond, its a straight cut show saddle, although dressage is our main discipline. It was made to measure when he was 4 and showing, he is now 9 and in the same saddle although I tend to have it checked & altered a little every 12 months. He has lost quite a bit of weight since it was fitted, and muscled up an awful lot...but I have a great saddler who does a fab job.
 
I've just bought my mare and she isn't broken yet, but she has a Wintec just now as I think she's likely to fill out a bit more so I can adjust the gullet.

Once she's fully matured I plan on buying her a Working Hunter saddle :)
 
I have a welsh C, and had the problem of no withers, short coupled, 13.2 pony and me 5ft 7!!

I also wanted a show saddle and was concerned that I wouldn't be able to get a saddle that fit both of us.

However, I have an Ideal working hunter show saddle, it is very neat and unless I have my stirrups very short, suits me aswell 9was concerned about knee coming over the front of the saddle)

It wasn;t off the peg as such - saddler requested certain adjustments from ideal. Fits a treat and also seems to fit well whatever he is doing (ie lots or little work)
 
Just remember that one of the adjustments was becuase the massive shoulder tended to make the saddle look tipped back - I think
 
fylde saddles the mick or ray are very popular with cobs we have the symmonds wh same tree as these they are great on our welsh cobs and many people who show welsh have these saddles.
 
The local master saddler found a used leather saddle to fit my Welsh D. When I bought her she was in a Wintec GP which pinched her shoulders and caused her serious pain. The used saddle that the saddler found her is actually an Arabian Saddle Company endurance saddle, but it just happened to fit her really well. She gets her saddle and back checked twice a year and we've only needed to have the flocking adjusted once.

IMO you get more for your money with used leather tack than with brand new synthetic. Wintec can be evil for native ponies and horses and I wouldn't recommend it. Thorowgood, from what I've heard, is much better than Wintec.
 
Not much fitted mine, got a 16.5 Wintec 500 VSD which is a tad on the small size for me but hes short backed and this was his max size, idea with him being a youngster though as I can adjust it as he fills out
