Has anyone any up to date websites/contacts with either performance type Welsh D stock or Welsh D x tb sports horses.

Needs to have a good jump in it as will event/hunt.

Not looking to breed and not a foal,
4yo+
Currently window shopping but would like an idea of what I’m looking for.

@ihatework did you end up with one?

thanks!

One of the best known performance lines of Welsh Ds are the Maesmynach bred. They can get big too; the stud sell very well for dressage and jumping and are very nice to deal with. They have youngsters at quite a range of prices; I highly recommend getting in touch with them - they are very welcoming. My Maesmynach is a little more traditional in her look but easily fulfills the performance title; she is very happy to jump 1m + and will do lateral work. She drag and trail hunts, shepherds at home and will do 20 miles over mountainous tracks with a smile and just enough sparkle to be a fun ride.

There are other lovely studs too: Corscaron breed performance horses as do Thorneyside. I hope I can have another Maesmynach one day though - I adore my clever little dragon. 😁

ETA: I see you are looking for 4yo plus - most of the studs will not have 4year olds so it may be worth thinking of a 3y/o.

the Welsh cob sale in Builth Wells later in the year might also be a happy hunting ground for you!

I know of a fun mare for sale in ni. She’s a beautiful dun or buckskin mare but typical welsh d so not for numpties.

Pm if you want to know more.

absolutely nothing against mares at all but needs to be a fella due to just due to living arrangements ie mine thinks he’s Billy big balls when there’s girls and there’s lot of herding and biting and escaping 🤣

@palo1 can I pick your brains please?

Is this more showing lines than performance lines? Thank you!

Ooh!! Interesting 🤩 I am not an expert at all but some nice breeding there. The Llanarth lines are lovely (and in the world of Welshies, top drawer) and very desirable. Llanarth cobs are very much dual purpose - for showing and performance. The Trefaes line is more of a showing line but actually quite sporting generally. The Abergavenny ponies are lovely and seem to be able to do multiple jobs too. Fronarth and Ebbw are more traditional and can be quirky bit they too have many fans and many are seen out competing in different disciplines!

I think that pedigree is full of variety and I'd be interested to see the horse. I wouldn't say it was necessarily a performance bred horse but performance breeding studs like Maesmynach also breed mares like mine whose ability is more than enough for me! However, if you want an eventer I do think as you moved up you would need more 'blood' in the breeding tbh. My mare will easily keep up with big, smart horses out drag hunting but I suspect she might struggle to make the time xc in competition. Show jumping would suit her physiology better: she is very nippy and clever as opposed to covering the ground with a decent, open stride a la TB!

I adore the whole daft Welsh cob thing and think they are great fun; often an interesting training challenge and very versatile but for out and put eventing a pure Welshie wouldn't be first choice, though you might get lucky with one. For dressage and show jumping they can be fabulous though.

Definitely consider Maesmynach, and Davieses are a lovely family, too. They do things with theirs; drive, hunt, one mare carried the Olympic Torch all through the town; and the cobs still look like quality cobs, not ‘horsy’. Many larger Section Ds have lost that distinctive, Welsh cob look, unfortunately.
I had a lovely 16.0hh Maesmynach gelding, viewed from up the field he could have been 14.0hh, he was so typey, with the most beautiful Welsh head. Cardi cobs!
Machno cobs, some of these can jump! Tough, typically smaller and lighter weight animals, some performing better than Grade A jumpers, and been sold / exported for large sums for ambitious young jockeys. I’m sure Machno also breed laid-back, docile ones(!), but do have a reputation for serious performance.
Better join the WPCS, get immersed, and enjoy!

Frank was by ebbw amber flash who was full brother to victor

He was quite square and not leggy, I’d have called him traditional rather than show or sporty! Flash did reasonably well in hand, and I would say stamped Frank rather well, I know nothing of his dam line though

Yes! I'd have another Maesmynach in a flash if I had time or room and hope I might have another when I have both of those again. My mare is more traditional in look but enormous fun and certainly sporty enough. She also has a fabulous temperament. She is almost 16 HH but always being accused of 14.2 as she is very typey. The referral practice's senior orthopaedic vet thinks she is superb - proud owner lol as I chose her as a 2yo when she was very small and plain - even Eric Davies described her as 'a bit old fashioned ' 😂.

I know the Llanarth horses quite well too and they are super I think. The stallions and mares have lovely temperaments and are light on their feet. I see quite a few Abergavenny horses but don't know much about their breeding only that they seem very good riding horses. Like most of our lovely native ponies there is huge variation within the breed so it is possible to find what you like I think, though I wouldn't quite suggest they were right for a novice owner/rider.

I have a larger Welsh D who is proving to be very game jumping, fantastic paces and looks the part.

He’s by Kylebeck Crespo (Crugybar Mabon Mai) out of Maesymor Sunbeams Last (Cathedine lines) and has a lot of great breeding in him.

He’s only 7 and been brought on slowly but is defo going to be more game jumping than my broken body can explore the full potential of but he will do just fine for me 😁
