Trying to learn about Welsh D lines and the bigger studs: what lines tend to be more quirky (or allegedly have PSSM), which studs are breeding more old-fashioned types, etc. As far as I know: Thorneyside tend to be quite big with a flashy trot; Tresorya tend to produce flashy colours but easy temperaments; Fronarth produce more true-to-type horses.

Particularly interested in hearing from anyone who's had a Coed Newydd horse. Am trying to encourage a friend who's looking for a D to go to the dispersal sale with me.

I had a Coed Newydd horse for 6 years and backed him. He was extremely backwards, yet know his half brother who was the opposite!

I believe there is a PSSM Welsh website with all the lines of each affected (and un-affected)

My lad is by Thorneyside the Terminator. Proper old fashioned chunky boy with good action, dished pretty face with pony ears.

Real true all rounder with a fantastic jump! Hell of a personality, clever, loyal & tries anything!

Does have all the typical 'welshness' though - can be very spooky, hot headed, stubborn & has opinion on how things should be done! I'd be worried if he was behaving himself & quiet 🤣 Wouldn't have him any other way!

Honestly, if I wanted another, I'd want the same lines!

I've ridden and known several welshies over the years but not for a while so couldn't help with the PSSM element ( it wasn't a thing when I was riding them) but in terms of temperament, I can honestly say I've never noticed any line to be any more crazy than any other, it all seems to be down to the individual horse. My D (Nebo & Llanarth lines) was bonkers but totally bombproof. He was nothing like the typical welsh, he never spooked he was just very excitable and keen to get on with the job. His full sister was an RDA pony. Nebo lines have a reputation for not being the most sane but to be honest almost every D will have Nebo somewhere in its breeding (Nebo Black Magic in particular was extremely prolific) so it's not necessarily fair to make that judgement.

A friend has a Maesmynach part- bred. He's certifiable on the ground but amazing under saddle. He evented up to intermediate, bold and brave, but extremely trainable. He's still going strong and jumping 1m courses at 25. Another friend has two with Ebbw lines, one was a nightmare as a baby, really sensitive but turned 8 and it was like someone flicked a switch to create the perfect gentleman. The other (she bought the second as the first turned out so well eventually) has been great since day one but is a lot more off the leg and forwards.

You always have to take every horse as you find them, but it's especially true with Welshies, I don't think there ever is a typical example of a specific line in terms of temperament - obviously each of the lines breed to a type physically.

That’s what I wanted from my Welsh D.. but he was extremely spooky (yet bombproof in traffic) and the opposite of excitable. I saw a Welsh D competing at Grassroots this year and it was a beauty, full of power and jump.

@stangs His Dam was Coed Newydd Karine and his sire was Coed Newydd Jack The Lad.

I’ll PM you his pedigree.
