Hi everyone,

I'm fairly new to showing and am taking my Welsh Section D to a show in a few weeks, and one of the classes I was looking at doing was a Ridden Mountain & Moorland.

I've read on various showing websites that horses and ponies (especially natives) are to be kept looking natural. My Welshy has a very long mane, and have seen conflicting advice of whether this needs to be pulled or not?

The show we're doing is only a small local one raising money for charity, but was still wondering what the correct thing to do was in this situation reguarding the length of his mane!

Thanks (:

The appearance of the mane should be natural, this means no plaiting or hogging and that it should not be pulled too short but most will have the mane shortened to a length that shows off the neck well.
If you want to leave it that is fine he is your horse and you are doing the show for fun.
You can reduce the length to allow the underside of his neck to be easily seen, you can go as short as about 1/2 the depth of his neck, a little shorter if his neck is weak as it will give the illusion of a stronger neck. Just make sure the finish is not too straight.

as above really - speaking correctly 'it should be pulled to aprox 6inches' give or take depending on the size of the neck as BP said how ever if you want to leave it long you can do so another thing that people do for weshes is one single plait (not rolled) at the top of the neck behind the headpiece of the bridle usually with a ribbon on the end :) good luck and remember its just for fun! enjoy!!

As others have already said - Welsh D's are always "tidied" to a degree, never shown totally natural. With regards to the tail, dont let this be dragging on the ground either but dont ever cut it straight across (like with non-natives), I was taught it should be tidied in a way that looks very natural and it comes to sort of a point. Good luck!
