The other day I arrive at the yard to find part of my electric fencing sprawled across the field and two rather mischievous looking horses grazing on the 'resting' grass
Thinking that I've been a bad mummy and let the charge go down, I fix the fence and test it. Zap! blinking hurt but checked all around the fence and current working fine. Put the boys back and thats that.
Next day I can see that my old boy is out again and some rather bent fence posts
again fix the fence do the checks and zap! still working fine wtf!
My yearling colt has not shown his face at this point so I go searching (I want to add that there is good fencing around this field) find him on the other side of a rather large fallen tree aprox 3'6. I climb over and see that he has made friends with two shetland mares who have just been put in that field
Look around and no way out except back over the big log so I chase him over. Two strides and pops it like a raised trotting pole!
Just as I am climbing over one of the slutty shetties calls to him, next second Merlyn trots around the corner and pops over the tree again (his poor young legs! So back over he is sent and I come up with the idea of putting 4ft electric fencing up in front of the log. Feeling smug I left my two in there paddock happy and munching on dinner.
This morning all the fence is in tact, yeay! One old gelding in the paddock but no yearling. Go to the tree and I see these big eyes and butter wouldn't melt expression peering from behind it again. So that is 4ft high with a 3'6 spread he's popped over ahhh!
So bit of advice please! is there anything else i should be doing? Going to chat to the farmer tonight and see if he wouldn't mind swapping the mares for his geldings just for a few weeks. Can you get those electric fencing posts over 4ft? Can I get a stronger current running through my fencing? 9v battery on there at the mo. My boys are moving to new grazing in three weeks where there are no mares around but just worried about his legs whilst he is doing all this x-country schooling!
Also want to say that the fencing around the fields and near the mares is huge and very safe so he wont be able to get to them.
Iced ring doughnuts for all of you still here!
