Welsh D's CAN do dressage! (self indulgent!)

Hurrah! Took F to his second ever prelim test and got a very respectable 64.75% and 3rd place! V V chuffed with him. We even got some 8's in there - one was for my riding

a bit of a bummer for a girl we know who thinks "Welsh D's can't do dressage" - we've been yearning to prove her wrong, and I think this does it nicely!

F has a lot going against his ability to do dressage, he is built like a tank, 15.2hh and heavier built than any sec D stallions we have ever seen (he's a gelding) a neck so big and set on so low he's built on the forehand, and an old injury to a hind leg means he's even more reluctant to sit up onto his haunches. He is the most willful character I have ever met but also has the biggest horsey personality I have ever had the pleasure to be around. Everything seems to take an ice age to make small steps forward, and our canter still isn't the best (5's in this test) but its things like this that make it all worthwhile!

Thank you for reading this far, and particularly to the people who have problems with their Welsh D's schooling - when I first got on him he stuck his head straight to the floor every time you asked for a transition, and I have been through 2 years of various "can't canter won't canter" problems. OK so with scores of 5 in our test we clearly have a long way to go but there was a point where even entering a dressage test seemed a distant hope!

Who says D's cant do dressage......let me at them, my little boy was a demon in the dressage ring god bless him and excelled in dressage up to elementry, had I not had such a fixation on showing, he probably would have gone further, they have a natural ability for it, keep going girl, well done

Of course Welsh D's can do dressage!!

My boy's only half a one but sounds like yours (built like a tank rather than with a leg injury) and has competed (unaffiliated) three times coming back with rosettes each time.

Well done you - esp 8 for your riding. Congratulations.

Well done! Im hoping to give it a go with my fell pony, not the ideal dressage horse but Welsh Ds can do it theres no reason why a fell can't

Wow teabiscuit that looks a stunner! We're hoping the yearling will do well in dressage in time.

Sadly no pics from this outing, but I must work out photobucket or something to post some of him.

of course they can do it!!! they have a natrual, powerful movement, and although they find the canter work harder, there is no reason they can't give the warmbloods a run for their money!! i have a sec d gelding - also built like a tank, hopefully he will take me further than my other little cob, as he natrually sits on his hocks more....

my welsh D got 81 points and got to Medium. his highest ever score was 83% at prelim, 76% at novice, 72% at elem and 64% in his only Medium. he was an absolute babe - that is him at the BD Winter Champs in my signature coming 4th!

I've just bought a new one to be my next dressage star - 15.2hh 5yr old chestnut welshie - moves like a dream, but very green at the moment - canter is a bit hair-raising!

My wifes welsh D (chestnut mare) currently has 235 BD points, qualified for regionals at novice, elem, and medium.
They will be doing their first advanced medium on the 19th.

....... and also performed in the dressage to music demos at YHL

My welsh D has been entered into 2 prelims to date on the first occasion she came 6th gaining 60% and more recently she came first gaining 65.42%. She actually qualified for Ponies UK Winter Dressage. I must say it was not me riding her but I intend to do it!!

On her last test she scored a 9 for medium trot with give and retake. Her canter needs working on though.

for pics of her first dressage test ever have a look on:

www.northfieldwoldphotography.co.uk

under the sports section and under Fry's 5th Jan 2008 - the first 33 pics are of her!!

This was the very first time she has ever done this and she is 11 years old. i love her dearly.
