Welsh D's - tell me about them/yours

before baby i would never have bought a Sec D (always a TB type person lol)now i would buy another happily - given baby was battered and beaten to extreme of losing her confidence in everything- dangerous unrideable ( i only bought her as she was saying im a good horse really) and that she is losing her sight baby is the most loving brave determeined little horse. She is beautiful (very old fashioned type in breeding) but its her heart that amazes me - yes can have an attitude but given her background that shows me what an amazing horse she is!!!! Her attitude is showing how she is taking to her loss of sight - she is at moment taking it in her stride and just goes so so beautiful when my daughter rides her trusting my daughter in what she asks her to do :) shes my little star and mmmmm bring on the next sec D he he he he he he :)

Thanks :) His dad is Jinette (I think he could be 16hh and grey?) however he isnt a PRE, just a andalusian with no paper I think. There isnt much infomation on this stallion but people who seen him says he is a good horse.

Danny (the horse in pictures) was just under 15.1hh when I last measured him, he could grow a little more as he still got some growing left to do. He will be doing affiliated dressage as he shows potential in this area so hopefully he get to PSG :)

I've never owned a welsh sec D, but have known several very well. I think like any breed they vary a lot.

a relative bought a 2 year old welsh cob to break in to be her hacking and a bit of everything horse.
He could be opinionated, but I don't think he was ever dangerous. However, he was too much for the relative (and had an amazing jump) so they sold him for a good price, and she got something less sharp and more suitable.

At my yard, there is also a welsh sec d, about 14.1hh but the more slimline build. She is the definition of opinionated.
when she arrived at the yard at the age of 4 or 5 she gave all the signs of being a lovely mare. However, with no visible fault in her education she began to stop at fences. She doesn't always does it, and is very good at fooling people into thinking that it's a good day, but she refuses in a dangerous way, nearly always pushing the fence over, dropping a shoulder and nipping out. She does have tremendous scope, and really proves this on the hunting field and cross country, but in the school she can be very dangerous.

the other welsh D i know is a more traditional type, quite lazy, loves his food. He is spooky, but not in a dangerous way, just "looks" at everything. does really nice dressage and shows well, and when you get him moving he has a lovely jump.

so a real mixed bag! I have to say I'm more of an irish cob person.

Ah Robyn, I love Phil!! He looks great in that last piccy, not over weight at all in my eyes :D just right I'd say!

Thank you :D Funny enough he was measuring the same on the weigh tape in both the cantering summer photo and the winter photo! Going home tomorrow so will be nice to see if he looks a little sleeker :p

I have a welshie. A 15hh Welsh Sec D.

He is opionated, spooky, scared of his own shadow, a bully in the field, can buck and spin on a penny, he is 16 and acts like a 2 year old, and affectionately known as 'the welsh sec git', and I wouldn't be without him! :)

He is very talented at dressage, but hates it! He can jump, but is scared of the fillers, and he hacks out beautifully as long as he is with another horse and not leading the hack.

I couldn't sell him, no one else understands him like I do. I have owned him for six years and I know he had a difficult time before I had him, but I love him to bits!

I can put anyone on him as long as he can see me he is fine...lol He is definately a one woman horse (which I secretly quite like :)).

Here is my handsome boy! :)

Mine is quite opinionated and is the most nosy horse going. If there's no one on the yard I'll let him have a wander and he goes off to investigate everything!

If he doesn't want to be caught, he'll have no problem evading me for a few hours - he's now learnt that I have more tricks up my sleeve than him though! If I'm pushing the wheelbarrow to the much heap, then he has to come and watch!

When I bought him he would try and take off with me as I would be leading him out the field. He was and in some aspects, still is a sod! He's very spooky, can spin and trot off with me for no apparent reason, has napped and has been known to rear (with previous owner).

As long as you stand your ground and are firm then they (as most horses) can be very affectionate. He's even attempted to groom me once and considering he's not a people horse I was gobsmacked! Maybe I had some chaff in my hair?

He is a very good doer and is unshod - his hooves aren't even being trimmed at the minute as the ground is wearing them down.

If you are after a Sec D, then go for it, just be prepared to remain consistent and firm!

This is mine;

Gosh the above 2 posts u could have both been describing my boy!!!

My welsh D is a total wuss! very spooky and can be so stubborn i think he's got mule in him somewhere, ive owned him for a year and although he has come on loads he has been very hard work. If he dosn't want to do something then all hell breaks loose, he will fight u tooth and nail and i have realised that its no good trying to bully him, when he loses the plot the best thing is just to stay calm and let him calm down and then try again!

He is good to hack out now with others but is terrible on his own, he sees dragons round every corner and i spend more time leading him than riding him when we have tried to go out on our own as he just plants and refuses to move, no amount of smacking or coaxing will make him go forward if he dosnt want to!

When i got him as a 4 yr old he was really nervous but i have had him a year now and he trusts me loads now and is really loving but is still a bit wary of strangers. As someone else says regarding D's he is also very one to one, i can do anything with him now on the ground where as when i first got him rugging , picking feet out and tying up was a big no. I lost count of the times he broke headcollars/leadropes just because he was bored of being tied up and decided to pull back and shoot down the yard to talk to his mates.

He is very nosy and inquisitive and if you take your time and let him look at things his confidence grows but he can turn into the typical fire breathing dragon over silly little things, he gets bored quickly, is bossy with other horses loves playing though and always gives me lots of kisses, he still trys to boss me on the odd occasion by scowling and pulling faces at me but a stern telling off and he gives in.

i didn't think he would be such a drama queen and the ridden side is still work in progress but would i be with out him?? .......no way i love him to pieces!!!

He has loads and loads of character and is so much fun. here he is
