Welsh Mountain Ponies

Not doubting that you have seen this somewhere - but I find it really hard to believe that this is correct.

What definition of a "breeding mare" is being used?

I am watching a documentary about it at the moment - although I have been aware of this issue for some time.

It is just another of our native breeds on the danger list - thankfully not yet critical however.

A breeding mare is a mare that is considered of breeding age and health.

Is that breeding mares in the wild, or including stud farms? Have to admit I never thought of them as being at risk

I'm not 100% sure actually - either way, 700 is no number at all

That is the usual definition I thought they might be using some other weird way of defining to make the numbers so low!!

I own a Section A (although a gelding) and live on a small Island and a guess of how many mares here would be about 50 - I know of about 10 within a 6 mile radius thats why I find it so hard to believe.

I totally agree about the natives though - its shocking - I have a friend with a highland mare and have mentioned that it is her duty to help save the breed!

Thinking about it probably too high a figure to be just wild mares, but scarily low if it includes studs. I somehow imagined there were thousands of welshies around.

It is quite shocking isn't it?

To be honest welsh ponies - especially section A's are the ones found at sales for a pittance that end up in unsuitable homes.

There has been more than one instance lately regarding breeders of these ponies being prosecuted, having disbursal sales containing underweight and uncared for animals, reports of neglect , and there is also the whole debacle where responsible breeders have to micro chip etc etc where as the hill ponies (which do belong to people) are exempt.

In all honesty a bit of selective breeding by responsible breeders would probably be better for the breed

I have actually read this before quite a while ago.I believe it was indeed those on the hills.

crikey I have a registered Welsh Sec A mare (a proven brood mare at that) - my immediate reaction was "I must put her in foal to save the breed" thank god I read a bit later that it is the hill ponies (which is still sad in itself but then I guess thats humans for you - squeezing out all thats natural!) Would be a terrible shame for the breed to become extinct in its natural form though - are measures being taken to stop this decline?

They mean wild breeding mares - there are plenty of 'domesticated' ones. My Sec A was wild until she was 5 and she bred two foals on the mountains - when she was caught in the round up and sold there were about 20 others with her. The same 'breeders' last year only had about 5.
