Anyone have one? Been to see a 12 yr mare this morning as a LR pony. Apart from the obvious weight management/escape artist issues, anything else I should consider. Have to say she was a cracking little pony, nice weight and condition and super with the kids who were handling her who are the same age as mine.

Yup ... there is one at our yard and my aunt has one

They can be headstrong ... difficult to catch ... imagine the least desirable elements of a shetland and a Welsh A in one horse! chuckle.

But - those are just the two that I know. I'm sure there are lovely ones out there too. :)

We have one out on loan, we bought him just backed for our children and he is a star! He put up with everything they wanted to do, looked after them when they rode him, and was great at handy pony. Yes he did get out but 3 strands of tape at the right height solved that. He is super kind, happy but cheeky chap with not a nasty bone in his body. Hes now teaching two more little girls to ride and care for a pony. Its not the breed that matters its how you handle them, if you expect the same good manners you would expect from your horse you will get on fine, let any equine walk all over you and they will.

Yes I have seen several ! As a teenager working on a welsh A stud the little old lady who had the stud also had a black standard shetland mare who arrived in a packing case direct from Shetland. She was covered every year by her stallion Coed Coch Nwyddl and a string of even tempered kids ponies were all for sale after being broken at four. That was my job! Being tiddly I spent every summer breaking and schooling these super kids ponies. There temprements were fab and they were smart ponies picking up things very quickly.

my friend had one when she was younger! I never met it but she used to ride it even when she had big horses, sounds like it was one of her fav horses from when she was younger! they used to ride and drive with her! he sounds like a fab little pony!

Thanks guys, generally a good vibe then. I am expecting she will cause me more fun and games than my TB, have already checked out escape routes and how much spare tape I have :) I have chosen her for her temperament tbh, the owners 3 kiddies are the same age as the ones she is coming to me for, she came to them from a family home and Im hoping she will just be a nice introduction to ponies for them. They will hopefully learn as much about horse sense and how to look after her properly than about riding and if they become good little riders, thats a bonus. She is coming with her tack and most importantly, a muzzle than she has not managed to wriggle out of. Not sure what Cliche will make of her, although we do have some mini shetties in a field we hack past and he is always fascinated by them so we'll see. The plan is to pop her next to him for now and go from there. Wish me luck!!

I had one for many years. Really good driving pony, but he was quite lively, bright and needed work so as to use his brain, not suitable for a small child although he looked like a little palomino angel.
