im a tad confused i was looking into maby showing math in a sec D class next season and iv let his FRIZZY! mane grown and his feather ect as i thought this is what they want ... well iv been looking through countless pictures of the welsh winners to see what they look like and most have a pulled mane ( well its longish ) they done have loads of feathers and there tails look like they are feathered at the bottom ... so does this mean maths going to need his mane pulled?
also they all seem to have kinda gelled manes .. how do you get this maths is like a afro its awful
xx

Here you go, useful link for some showing tips :)

Yes manes are pulled, lengths vary depending on the individual horse. For example a bigger neck (stallions etc) can carry off a longer mane, you can also thin the mane out if its really frizzy.

Tails can be discreetly pulled at the top if they are particularly unruly, and they are feathered at the bottom to a point, generally mid way between hocks & fetlocks although the current fashion is for shorter, but I personally don't like it.

Jawlines/beards/ need to be trimmed and ear fluff too, whiskers are a personal choice.

You want him to be 'au natural', but at the same time a LOT of trimming goes into the Welsh Ds!!

For example, I thin Genie's feathers, and feather her tail so that it is not too long but doesn't look like it's been cut. I keep her mane long but tidy and don't let it get overly long, and the night before a show I will put plaits in so that the next day it is wavy.

Majorly untidy mane...

Tidied up for the show ring, with thinned feathers, shorter tail, and tidier mane

And the wrong horse, but this is what I do to Genie's mane the night before a show as well...

Sorry, I get a bit carried away with photos sometimes! Hope that helps anyway... I'm sure other people have different methods/opinions, but that's my way of doing it! :D

fihunt- You wanna come do my beasts mane? LOL

I err had a go today and destroyed it, haha. It was a total fail and not much shorter as the bit I did lookeD ridiculous, i did it with a solo comb and it went blunt and straight. Oh dear lord. Never again!
I think only I can notice it though seeing as I did it D:
I cut the floor length tail too but that looks fine and the beard whihc also looks fine.
I don't do fetlocks as she doesn't have much feather anyway :)

I predominantly show in hand but I think the same thing goes for ridden.
We aim to trim but not look like we have trimmed. All whiskers are removed and all under the jaw line. The old boys tell me to use a candle but I havn't the nerve so I tend to use a horse shave or if you want cheaper google surgical razors.
If the horse is quiet we pull the mane or in not we use a thinning rake, but do not have a straight pulled line, we 'trim' each mane as apprpoite to the animal, and we feather the tail with a sharp knife. For in hand we aim for about the hocks but for ridden it is usually left longer.
At the show we use brylcreme att eh base of the mane to flatten it onto teh correct side then baby oil in the mane and tail to make it sparkle. I don't know how this would affect the reins and that's about it.
