Welsh Sec D x TB - good for eventing?

As the title suggests.

Has anyone had any success with this combination for eventing? Thinking about dabbling in a native x again for eventing (fancy a change from my warmblood x TBs!) but have normally had Connemara x TBs in the past.

Any thoughts?
 
I'm pretty sure this is what Olivio has- he does the most amazing dressage test and jumps for fun. She was eyeing up the advanced SJ at Scone and saying she'd like a crack at that! :eek: Give me the Int XC over the Adv SJ anyday...! ;)

Obviuosly it depends on the horse in front of you and they may struggle for speed at the higher level unless they had a high % tb? I would definitely be looking for a native X tb (connemara or Welsh D) for a future ride. :)
 
I would have one in a second :) When I bought the coloured one I was actually looking for a welsh x tb, but there was something about J that I liked, and he was cheap! ;)
My pure Welsh D jumped for fun in his youth. He had a freak accident in the field at 9 and I didnt jump him up to a decent height after that but do on occassion steal him from his loaner to have a play :) i think without the accident he would have been quite a successful little eventer but he lacks confidence now and short of taking him back to basics I doubt he will event again (he's nearly 20!), although I have threatened to have a bash round an intro with him next year :)

So yes, in short, definitely a cross to consider! :D
 
Personally, I'd have them any day over a warmblood.(maybe cause the one I had was stoopid?) I am now onto my second Welsh X TB for eventing. My first one was heavier set and wasn't quite as speedy and was never ever going to make it as an eventer no matter how much I tried to convince him. However, you cannot beat them for bravery, soundness and cleverness.

I now have the GTI version Welsh X TB and have never struggled to meet the time only when I decide to keep the handbrake on have I incurred penalties. Going up to Novice may be a different story admittedly! There are some dressage judges who either love them or hate them so be warned!!
 
I've got a TB x Welsh D, not competed her as yet, but at home she is brave and has one hell of a pop in her...... She will go out and do some Stressage over winter and a little hunting and then would like to consider eventing her.
 
Yes they are mega and can jump the moon! I would get another one in a shot

This is my old chap who was welsh x tb in the 3'6'' cubhunter at Kingsclere, this is the last fence No 31!!! and he was still going strong, although as you can tell by the **** position I was flagging!

He is still to this day the most powerful jumper I have ever ridden, he was as quirky as anything, but so much fun to ride xc, and gave me so many happy times.

I think welsh x tb is a fab mix, nice and hardy, but with tb looks, and welsh power

TB x sec. D 14.2 pony: events v comfortably at one star, BSJA jumps 1.20 classes, BD wins elementary.
Downside: thinks much too much = spooky, quirky, opinionated!!
 
i hope so - i'm having one vetted next week. he has already done BE100 and lots of double clears.

i was going to event my pure welsh D (chestnut in my signature) once i'd taught him show-jumps didn't bite (XC never been an issue - hes schooled over Novice fences and jumps anything out hunting) but he's injured now.
 
On the topic of welsh x tb's i am breeding my very own one! yay! Mare to be AI'd in april 2011,just wondered what your oppinions are on my choice of daddy,i really like him but am wondering if he's light weight enough for my mare? My mare is perfect apart from one front leg dishes ever ever so slightly,her canter isn't great but wow that trot! She struggled with speed and stamina xc,something i'm hoping the daddy will improve,she had a big big pop and regularly jumped me off!I say 'had' she broke before she was barely 5 so just hacks and does sp rides now :( My wants from daddy are very nice canter,agile and light weight,16hh+,straight mover. Any other tb stallion suggestions? oh and i was hoping daddy would be black also to keep the theme going but it's not a total must.

This is my mare and my choice of daddy (please tell me i've chosen ok!)

Havn't many pics of my mare on this comp but she did showing,rc/pc everything,pics are her at 4 at her 1st rc camp! oh and a random 1st sj comp pic!

we have one, it's a funny old story. my sister had an anglo arab mare that she put to a irish draft x for 2 years and on the third year the calves had chewed her tail so my sister didn't want to send her back to the posh stud like that so sent her to the welsh d stallion down the road. this produced a 15.2 bay mare, the others had been 16.3 chestnuts. now she isn't the most beautiful in the world but what a heart she has. we were told by our trainer oh! she'll never make an eventer she doesn't move well enough. Sure enough dressage marks were not good at pre novice level although she did manage to win her first one, but she could do all the tricks and had a good rhythm so she quickly made the points up to intemediate level. She was well placed at burgie 1 star cos she was so nippy and you could cut all sorts of corners with her! we didn't take her intermediate as we weren't sure of her scope, instead she went on loan to several pony club children and has taken them to JRN champs, pony club open and novice champs and is a wonderful schoolmaster. We have bred 2 nice foals from her as well, and if they have her jump we will be well pleased. go for it I say they have good hearts and fab jumps and they are breeding cobs now that do have better movement. We do have a 'D' as well that is going to do intro next year, he is our playing at showing horse at the moment!

I would second the comment above re downside, but would also say the upside is great!

We had one - ironically called Alphie!! (Balhagarty Alpha - the first from the Balhagarty stud) who took my daughter to the JRN Champs. He could have done pure dressage or SJ (endless scope and ability) but for eventing would probably not have made the time at Intermediate, although he would give it a shot, and certainly had the scope and bravery (when he wasn't spooking :eek:at the fence judge or something!):D

He was not one to respect you 'space' when on the ground though and was a bit 'rude'!!!:rolleyes:

Definitely keeping the gruesome twosome - who else would want them?!?! Although Amber's trying her very hardest today to exterminate Alfie having just left a large hoof print on his shoulder.

Not bothered about high level eventing with Sec D x TB as I'm too rubbish to do so! Just fancy playing around with something with a touch of native again. However, have been offered a couple of cracking WB xs and am struggling to resist... the sooner I get shifted to the larger premises the better!!!!! Mr NJ may disagree though ;-)

p.s. Clydie x TB possibly one of my most fav mix. Had a couple over the years - fab nature!
 
I met one recently - It looked like a warmblood and moved like one. I found out he was 23 years old and had evented to advanced and was now having an easier life clearing up at dressage competitions! I would not normally be a fan of this breeding but he was a smashing horse!
 
Definately! Although I'm biassed because Bronts (welsh X TB) was obviously the best pony about ;)
He was built more like a mini TB with hairier legs, had no problems with making the time or with the height of jumps (sometimes with the width of things, but I think that was probably me being a wuss!). He did however have a big attitude problem and could be very stubborn with a large repetoire of airs above the ground that were saved for the dressage :rolleyes: Great fun though!
 
Out of curiosity, does anyone with great crosses know which way 'round the cross was? A friend of mine used to breed Connemara x TB specifically for eventing and she found it made a big difference which way around she did it, and which bloodlines - on both sides - she used. It certainly did produce a range of types!
 
I LOVE my ''Welbred''! Welsh D dam x TB sire. Although she is smaller than she should have been, she is is little power house and will try her upmost to please. Loves jumping, and has got good paces for dressage.
 
I had a connie x TB before and after him I was quite sold on the idea of a sec D x TB - but for some reason (probably me) I couldnt get to grips with the movement of any I tried, (inc a Balhagerty) and the jump was so different to what I was used to, straight up and down and very downhill. I know there are loads out there doing really well tho! Love my new lad tho - TB (accondy) x AngloArab/Highland

I've got a mare here thats half sister to Beltaine. Shes a very good mover, and has a foal at foot by my Welsh D stallion. He is a super sort, so think you will do well.
I am particularly breeding this cross to produce 15.2hh eventers/Intermediates. Heres a couple of pics of a full brother and sister. I think this is a very underrated cross, but perhaps I'm prejudiced!
