Welsh Sec D x TB - good for eventing?

In a heartbeat! Mine was bought to event then I got the dressage bug. He used to jump for fun - jumped round newcomers as a youngester but then concentrated on dressage and got up working intI/II competing PSG before his injury.

His half brother evented successfully and is now very sucessful dressage horse - competing at the moment Advanced Medium, working PSG

I've got a mare here thats half sister to Beltaine. Shes a very good mover, and has a foal at foot by my Welsh D stallion. He is a super sort, so think you will do well.
I am particularly breeding this cross to produce 15.2hh eventers/Intermediates. Heres a couple of pics of a full brother and sister. I think this is a very underrated cross, but perhaps I'm prejudiced!

WOW! if my baby ends up like that i'll be a very happy girl! esp the black one he is gorge! I've always wanted to put my mare in foal to a TB and as i want to do BE myself i thought the cross would be perfect. How is the Ganton temperment? my main thing is a good canter, does your mare have a nice canter? My mare is flashy and can half produce a stonking extended trot but her canter wasn't great. Do you have anymore pics of Gantons half sister? i havn't seen many of his offspring to be honest,i know his half brother Ganton Rufus is related to my mare on his welsh side,Rufus is very nice too.

I can see how it would make a lovely combination, as although I have never had a welsh X tb, I do have a welsh c/d and my sister has a tb and we often say how if somehow we could merge them together you would have a pretty much fantastic little horse :p.

I can't say I've seen her canter too much, she's 18 now and has steadied down. Her mother is Fair Splash who is also dam of Beltaine and Rufus. I have to say she gets a bit fussed over silly things, but shes been through several breeding homes and that won't have helped her. If you look on Youtube under Cundlegreen, there is a video of her with her latest foal by my "D" stallion. Heres the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0niOs7LYIhQ

I loaned a friends Welsh x TB, that she had evented to intermediate. Best horse I have ever sat on - real schoolmaster. Still a quirky little devil, but tried his bloomin' hardest to please at every opportunity. Lots of heart and scope too - lovely horse and would def have another. When I was looking to buy, tried to find one but nothing in my budget then. My advice would be go for it! :)

Just got back from the Writtle Futurity with my two foals. One Welsh D cross TB , the other TB cross Welsh D cross TB . They both scored the highest vet score of the series so far, 9.5. The vet was commenting on how many youngsters have enlarged joints. Shows I'm on the right track with my breeding programme, and that the native /TB crosses can hold their own with the warmbloods.
One of my foals was highest scoring event foal, the other just below him and Reserve. They were also 4th and 5th highest score for the whole day. Was I chuffed!!!!

TB x sec. D 14.2 pony: events v comfortably at one star, BSJA jumps 1.20 classes, BD wins elementary.
Downside: thinks much too much = spooky, quirky, opinionated!!

Ha ha ha! Totally agree! My Welsh x TB is just like this! Spooky, quirky and opinionated sums him up completely .. but he jumps for fun and is very low maintenance (lives on air)

Hi, in 1992 I poineered the formation Welsh Part-bred horse group through the Welsh Pony & Cob Society-still going strong today. I did so because for about 10 years prior to this, I'd been observing this cross, and I'd a thing about Welsh Cobs, and loved the spirit too of the TB. So yes, a great cross for competition work full stop. For eventing you probably need more blood so a 25% or 12.5% if you aim for 3/4 star. Having said that, 50%'s have completed Burghley. If you've any queries I'd be happy to help if I can.
