There is a horse at our yard that has been sold as a welsh cob!! Simple enough, the only thing that strikes me as odd is that he is 16.3. is there a height limit? I always thought it was 15.3 Am I totally off the mark??
there are some huge pure bred d s now i dont like them over 15hh myself as they lose charactor ,and dont do well showing as sec d but as sport horses they are great for the job maesmynach stud breed them big .
Yup, there is no upper height limit now. As blueberry says it's a shame as they lose all the pony character when they get bigger, make cracking riding horses though.
I think it's awful that the height limit has been raised, it means that section Ds are no longer ponies, at least the height limit is still in place for olympia, otherwise you'd have a Shetland pony up against a 16h+ section D, ridiculous.
there is no upper height limit on sec d's, one stud does breed them big, more like sports horses....personally, i think this is bad for the breed as they lose the pony characteristics and type....
I believe there is no upper height limit now but agree that they are losing their poniness and type. The last time I was at olympia I was gobsmacked by the size of some of them.

The maesmynach (sp?) cobs are bred on the large side.

yes! i have a Maesmynach horse and he is a complete star. He's just under 15.2hh, he still has the Welsh Cob build, the massive neck and the pony head. I wouldn't want one any bigger than him though - they still make good riding horses but they just dont look like Welsh Cobs to me.
