Having found myself in possession of a welsh sec a foal on a sort of loan i may be in the position soon of deciding whether to buy the horse or not.

Basically I am interested to know if when the filly is old enough will I be able to back her myself as this may help my decision.

I am 5ft4 and approx 9 stone.

She is 10.1h at the moment, about 10-12 months old.

There are no other ponies below 13.3h on the yard so no-one knows if i will be too big to back her.

Any ideas??

EDIT - found this website but no idea what weight an adult sec A would be so cant work it out, lol - http://iceryder.net/weight.html

I'm the same height as you but a bit lighter (just under 8st). I have worked for a number of owners/breeders backing and bringing on youngstock, but the smallest I feel 'comfortable' on tend to be 12.2 and up (and stocky, dartmoor types.)

I am currently schooling a Welsh sec A mare as she is very green and extremely bolshy! She is however fully mature (11) and has developed the correct muscles by longreining and schooling in hand. I am now riding her for 5-10 minutes a few times a week, walk and trot only. I don't feel comfortable riding her to be honest, I think I am too heavy and am hoping her manners improve quickly so I can pass her back to her little owner!

At the end of the day it is your decision, and I doubt you would 'harm' her, but personally I wouldn't. If you do decide to go ahead I would recommend holding off on backing until she is 4 to give her a little more growing on time.

:)

everyone says about mountain and moorlands being hardly little things so i thought it would be okay but adults on ponies can be a sensitive subject sometimes it seems :)

I was told by a vet, years ago, that an 11hh Sec A could carry 9st (which was still no good to me cos I'm 11 stone on a good day :D )

:D But remember that it's your weight + the weight of clothes/hat/bp if you wear one + tack; all on an immature pony.. Although you could ride bareback, that is what I am doing ATM :)
