I’m thinking of getting a Welsh Section D but one that is more of the chunky type with good bone and a decent barrel to make around 15.2hh. Also of the less quirky nature. I looked at one recently but it didn’t work out. I don’t really want younger as I don’t think I have the right place for it plus I need to have a good idea it will make the height.

Most seem to get sold at foal/yearling age Are there any studs or places I should look for this type?

I got my 3yo 15.2hh Welsh D years ago but from a very small breeder. I advertised wanting one and they approached me so may well be worth putting some wanted ads on some facebook pages for example. 15.2hh's are obviously "over height" so there's not that many of them around. I adored mine even though he was the biggest challenge of any horse Ive ever had though (he WAS very quirky, good luck finding one who isnt!).

The Welsh Section D breed standard only specifies a minimum height (over 13.2) not a maximum. I know many of course are around the 14-14.2 mark.

Maesmynach breed larger welsh cobs and they have the occasional 2/3yo posted on their Facebook. Welsh take a while to mature and fill out so what you see at 3 probably isn’t what you’ll have at 8. I’d be looking at bone rather than overall chunk at that age to have an idea - you don’t want a fat 3yo! It might be easier to find a nice partbred unless you’re set on showing (for which a 15.2 wouldn’t be a lot of judges favourite anyway) - welsh do very well on many breeds depending on what you’re looking for they seem to retain a lot of type. Good luck!

ETA obviously typeyness of a PB will vary but you’d pick that based on your own preferences and % of welsh anyway! 😇

There isn't a height limit on Welsh D's anymore, much to the demise of the breed in my mind

Yeah I don’t want fat more well-sprung rib cage. There are some that don’t seem to have much of a middle. There’s a lovely mare on my yard with a good solid build.

I’ve seen some that are quirky and some that I would call “spirited” 🤣.

I agree. They lose their pony-ness. There is one up here who is the best part of 16hh and does very well in Hunter classes. The only Welsh thing about him is his attitude and his feathers. There is not a single pony feature to him and the true Welsh movement has gone.
