Welsh section d experts? red ribbons?

If you put a red ribbon in your horses tail for a Welsh ridden class, will it count against you? if the judges was looking for something to put you down if it was between you and another person? - hope that makes sense - my boy isnt a kicker per say but if someone walks very closely behind him he will put his ears back and act like a mule and may kick out or bum slam

Also in big classes people do come very close and as he has a HUGE stride i need quite a bit of room ...

So will the judge say ew no to my horse if he has a red ribbon?

Manners are important. As a judge I'd take a dim view of a horse that might kick even if only implied. Apart from the fact that it is incorrect for a D to wear a ribbon. Only Dales wear a ribbon in the tail.

Get him used to having others come up behind him. As a D you would probably be one of the largest in a class of M & M's & everyone will be scared of you.

Then again others in the class probably wouldnt be particularly happy if they did get too close to you and your horse did kick and there was no red ribbon to warn them..

Get him used to people walking up behind him. Do it daily, over and over and over.

Red ribbons are off putting in local shows where the judge is looking for manners amongst everything else. BUT you may well have children in the class, so cannot take a kicker in without a red ribbon.

In larger shows, where welshies are in classes of their own, it may be more acceptable.

Best bet is to de sensitise.

I have a pony who can pull faces, and occasionally kick out, if other horses come close to him and when I took the precaution of putting a red ribbon in his tail for a ridden showing class I was told by the judge that it was a definite "no no" in the show ring. I was basically told that I should get him used to being ridden with other horses.

Whenever I have ridden him in a show class, no other horses have come up close enough behind him to make him kick out, so even if I put the tail in during warm up (which gives others in the class time to realise he may kick), I take it off before we go into the show ring.

He is okay he just pulls a face which isnt attractive unless he is in a ring full of camels he rarely kicks its just the face

But thanks for letting me know about the manners bit i bought a horse and rider mag yest and it was saying about that so i started thinking about wether or not to put one in as i used to for my little pony as we was a grumpy bugga

It is frustrating for you to have a pony that will or may lash out, but there is absolutely no place for him in the show ring.

How would you feel if horse lashed out at you and broke your leg or your horses leg ?

Any hunter lashing out will be asked to leave the ring and so be it with any other breed.

The whole point of wearing a ribbon whether it be red white or green is for safety in the show ring and to make other aware. As you mentioned above you believed there is a likelihood of your horse kicking. Would you rather lose a placing and a rosette than an innocent competitor or horse being kicked which could lead to a serious injury? Blatant disregard for safety is unacceptable in my eyes personally.

Well, lets hope it's you it kicks and not somebody's high value show horse or even worse a child.

I stand by my comment no horse should be shown in ridden classes where there is a group of horses in together, ie, show pony, hunter classes etc, that kicks.

My interpretation of Laafets comment was that it would make no difference to her if a horse that she was judging had a ribbon in its tail!

I'm another that thinks there is no place for a known kicker in a ridden class, it makes no difference whether a judge would mark it down or not, (although as temperament and manners are important attributes then I'd wonder why not) The fact remains that the other competitiors are effectively being put at risk which isn't on.
