I have a welsh section D x Arab gelding who is 2 years old, he has always been quite nervous since i bought him at 6 months old, he is really friendly and i spend hours with him every day just spending time with him, he follows me around the field and is very friendly with me. he lets me pick up his front feet but when i try to get near his back legs he becomes very scared he would even go as far as falling over with fear. im not sure if this is because of him getting gelded or if somthing scared him before i owned him? he is quite nervous especially around men.

I have been bought up with horses as my mam has always owned horses, but he is the first horse i have owned myself. basically i would just like a few pointers on how to build his trust up in me as i know how important this is so he trusts me to touch him all over... i know he wont start trusting me overnight but id rather him trust me when it comes to training, rather than me bullying him into doing things... sorry to rant on, this is my first post on here so hello to everyone :) x

I think that as your horse is still young it is a matter of gradually building up confidence. Handle the hind legs without picking them up until the confidence grows. I bred a Welsh D X Anglo Arab who matured into a sensible and very easy horse so I don't think it is the breeding. The Ds and Arabs tend to be very intelligent however. Make sure you are talking in a very calm voice when handling so that any anxiousness you may have insn't being communicated to the youngster. Good luck!

you could also try one of those fake sheepskin mits on a stick, that way you can stay out of harms way and also be stroking and reassuring horse and just very gently stroke the scary bit, preferably starting in a non scary bit and going a bit scarier each time.
