Welsh Section D's .. tell me about the breed :-)

My 5 year old is DxTb; I think it is a fab mix if you don't want a full on D. He is a quick learner with lots of personality. Thinks he is a bit of a comedian, removing hats and dribbling water down the back of your neck. He pretends, to be scared of things that he has seen a million times before but just needs to be told to strap on a pair!! However he is very easy going, doesn't care what time you bring in or turn out, and very generous and forgiving, although often accompanied with a pained "for gods sake woman" expression!!

Without reading other replies my synopsis is:

forward-going
quite sharp
lovely movers
brilliant jumpers
sweet temperament
beautiful
easy to keep, esp unshod
some are quite strong but mine isn't
a nice build - just right height wise and medium weight
brave

I think they make a good second horse but I wouldn't recommend them for a novice in most cases.

Character depends on the line the horse was bred from to some extent. Mine is from the Nanteglwys stud which breeds for temperament as well as conformation.

I've had a few Section D ponies over the last 20 years, various ages. They have all been very different and lots of fun. The only things they have all had in common is it has taken them a while to settle and to trust, once they do they have all been excellent ponies.

I had one as a teenager, a beautiful mare who was affectionate, kind and had lovely manners not at all Mareish or bolshy, but to ride she was very strong and very hot headed. She could jump amazingly but I had to be careful who I hacked wi as she could turn a nice quiet ride into a race.

I have had three, two part bred mares and full sect D gelding. The first mare who was out of an arabxTB mare to Nebo Blackmagic was an absolute star and a joy to own and ride. She was very opinionated and intelligent but tried her heart out for you. The next was her filly to a TB stallion, again very strong minded and hard work to gain her trust even though I owned her from birth, still have her she will be 21 this summer. The gelding I bought as a 5 year old again from Nebo lines and he is stunning but very hard work, he is nervous and very strong. He could be very pushy when handling from the ground but he is over that now with a lot of ground work. He is a typical sect d and is very intelligent and very opinionated. I love them to look at but don't think I would buy a purebred again.

Mine is fab .. I have owned him since he was 2 ( now 7) he bends over backwards to please me ..and is very competitive .. But with other people he does whatever he wants ..drags them everywhere ..but would dream of dragging me :p he is a real character !

The ones I've known have been quirky but very brave and a heart of gold. I bought my first D in November, he's rising 3. He is the sweetest thing, and totally not phased by anything. He is cheeky, and needs firm consistent handling to keep him in check. But I adore him, I think he's great!

Well mine is a sweetheart really and his main aim is to please BUT he is not a fool and won't be taken advantage of either.Had a 'friend' who, because she saw him go so quietly and sweetly for me decided he was obviously a total walkover because I am so useless etc.She had a sit and decided he wasn't quite sharp enough off the leg for a superb rider like herself so she really cracked him one with her stick. He put in a HUGE buck (not bad going as she weighed about 15 stone, total respect) and said You Can Pack That in! You should have seen her face, so funny.

I would have told her to get off and I would have hit her with the stick!!!

My beast ;)

Don't think I wasn't tempted but really he did the job for me! She was terrified after that but tried hard not to show it! He is as sweet as sugar but he can look after himself.

.

Just to give a bit of balance mine is

A plod (only fwd on the home straight and that's just a slightly more active walk)
Not sharp ( but can be spooky over silly things)
Moves like a seaside donkey ( unless showing off free schooling when her true welshness comes out)
Can't jump ( does a wonderful cat leap tho)
Wonderful temperament - not a bolshy bone in her
Not strong

I love my mare, she is mostly easy aside from spooking at nothing but since being on a mag supplement you wouldn't really call he spooky these days.

My next plan is to buy a v good colt foal next year to keep as a stallion with the idea of maybe having a go at breeding. I'm busy having/rearing babies now so by the time the foal is grown ill be ready to start breaking/showing him!
Always wanted a D stallion and so I've decided I'm having one!

This is exactly what my mum did! Bought a cracking Gwynfaes colt foal at weaning, kept him on entire, showed him in-hand as a youngster but as he was always intended as a long term riding horse he was never over fed and stocked up to look like he was 8yo when he was 2yo! He was gelded at the start of his 4yo year as we really had no use for a D stallion and it wouldn't be fair on him surrounded by Shetland mares to drive him insane. He is currently away being backed and is taking it all in his stride so far by all accounts.

He does have one absolute fascination - Exmoors!!! If he is in the show ring with exmoors in another ring he can't keep his eyes off them! Lol!

Fab breed, not a novice ride. Have seen problems when people think they are buying a nice ploddy cob - mine is bolshy, opinionated, loyal, sensitive & the best horse ever. She's 16 this year & I need to win the lottery so I can have her cloned. Don't think ill ever find a horse as perfect as she is (to me)

I love mine and sometimes I hate her too. :D

she is very versitile but not always the most willing.
Very very strong and very easy to keep.
Best feet ever and always barefoot.
Very spooky and very opinionated. oh, and she knows how the bat her eyelashes!!

I love the breed but in general more a adults pony then a child one.

Will keep it short as written paragraphs on these kind of threads before..

I think they're brilliant, my favourite breed. Hardy, great allrounders. Can be quirky but that makes them fun. I had 2 at one point and they were like chalk and cheese, now just back to the one who I've had 9 years in July. :)

I have three gorgeous mares. All brought as 2 year olds. The breeder who I brought from gave me one piece of advice" never let them know their own strength" remember this and it will stand you in good stead. Mine are all sharp as ***** but wonderfully talented. They are beautiful to handle on the ground though. So I can't recommend them enough to anyone who wants some fun but knows how to handle them.

My boy is 3 in May and I've had him since April 2013. He's naughty cheeky Bolshy hard work energetic rude but then he's intelligent kind smart sweet beautiful, however you always have to be one step ahead of them, as others have said give them a yard and they will take a mile. I wouldn't swap mine for the world he's one of the best ponies I've had.
