I'm sure some of you saw my post on gundogs, and at the time we were thinking of a lab. However Dad has fallen for Welsh Springers after seeing them in action at the CLA Game Fair.

I wasn't with him, so I'd love to see some pics!!!

I'm aware they aren't that common but he wants to do a BASC Shooting coach course first, then get a dog when he has lots of time to train it, and of course when there are some avalible.

But....piccies would be fab!

Despite being a Spaniel Lover, Welshies aren't my cup of tea.
I'm a ESS Girl through and through, but then the modern ESS aren't my cup of tea either.

I have an ESS from Wales though

I don't think the temperaments on Welsh springers is as sound as ESS's IMO. They can be a bit more nervous, at least every one I've ever groomed...a bit quick with the teeth.

I've only come across one in my life that I can recall, he was a bit neurotic and yappy TBH. Although having said that, alot of the modern ESSs can be just as bad.
I think a WSS breed characteristic is Stand-Offish, which would explain alot!

From what I have read they are a bit less hard-headed than an ESS, which is no bad thing! Also because there is such a small number of them, there is less diversifaction - you can find an ESS line to suit you because of the huge number of them - WSS tend to be bred more to look like a WSS (for showing) than for any particular ability (although this is a huge generalisation and I'm sure there are plenty to prove me wrong!)

I would hesitate to add that unless you are really prepared for it, any Springer is a tough first gundog (apologies if this is not his first

) I would also steer clear of any heavily Field Trial Bred dog, as they can be tough buggers (as my Mum will only too happily testify!)

But that is just IMO and I'm certainly no expert!

He's had dogs before, who have gone shooting but not neccassarily been 'gundogs' - think mongrel cross bred that looked like a 3st Jack Russell with longer legs.....!

He's also the most stubborn, determined person I have met. He relishes finding 'difficult' ponies and working with them. I know if he has decided this is what he really likes, he will make it work - he doesn't tolerate badly behaved children or animals!! LOL

Thanks though, and any more pics, dig them out....! I missed them at the Game Fair.

My housemate had a welsh springer, they look like slightly shorter springers, and chunkier...... however hers was......... how can I say this? FAT!!!!! really REALLY FAT!

I understand it is easy for people to generalise from a limited experience had with a particular breed.

I own five WSSs and none of them are neurotic or snappy. They make super family pets, show dogs and are excellent shooting dogs.

I take four of my five out two/three days a week on shoots during the season and are they are hard working, biddable animals. The only drawback is they take slightly longer to train than working ESS or working Cockers (you need a bit more time and patience) as they are still a "dual purpose" breed.

The majority of WSS breeders breed for a well constructed, healthy dog that still has all it's natural working ability and we try and promote that working ability as much as possible.
Unfortunately being a numerically small breed doing this is sometimes an uphill battle with only around 400 puppies registered with the KC per year as opposed to around 15,000 ESS.

When I was a student many many years ago, I used to walk the dogs for the RSPCA in Swansea. The most common breed that was dumped was Welsh Springers as they can be a handful.

I love the spaniel in the hat

I also love the sleeping spaniel - a sleeping spaniel is a well-behaved spaniel!
