hi just a quick question, can anyone tell me the difference between a welsh ds temperament and a traditional cob,
as my welsh d is quite sharp and can be nervous do they calm with age or get worse thank you also should i thin his mane or leave it natural as it is very thick
 
How is your D bred, there are some breed lines which are more well known for being sharp. My D is the opposite, he's very laid back and calm, so there aren't any hard and fast rules.

With regards to his mane it really depends on what your plans are and personal preference. For example, I mainly focus on dressage and showing so my boys mane has been thinned out to enable neat (ish) plaits and pulled to an acceptable length for showing
 
my lad is welsh d x traditional cob so i have the best of both worlds,he is only a yearling but is proving to be a fab lad and very laid back

I own one of the above and would also be quite interested to hear people experiences with sharp/nervous sec d's and calming with age???
 
As has been said, it depends on the horse but a few years ago I was telling a welsh breeder about my boy and his "high jinks" shall we say and she asked if he'd got Nebo breeding and when I said yes she said there you go then!!! He's 19 and I still fear for my life when we're on grass, but then they say that about tbs and I had an ex point to pointer on loan before I bought Victor and she was an utter plod! Oh happy days!
 
Got one who is bolshy and can be sharp - he has mellowed with age but still has his moments

Got one who is really sharp and spooky

Got one who is a complete doofus.

I have a sec D who was very nervous and scared of anything people would do to him when I got him. He has always been very good in traffic etc and not spooky with objects. When ridden he wanted to go everywhere at 100mph. Nearly 2 years later I can do almost anything to him and whilst still forward going he is a completely different horse.

I think a lot depends on the individual horse and what experiences it has had in its life. I have had 4 section D's over the year, 2 have been very laid back, one was quite sharp and wizzy, and the one I have now has transformed from crazy to laid back!

Also not all traditional cobs are quiet! I know of a few locally who have been bought by relatively novice riders and are totally unsuitable for them.

Sorry, so do I! Another thing with mine is that he's never got used to loud noises or traffic, he goes to pieces when he hears a tractor out on the lane, as a result we don't venture on to the road anymore, Ive never known such a woolly woofter, but he's gorgeous!
 
Frank is 16 and still has moments.

Generally speaking he is a saint and can be completly trusted around children, will be completely chilled on a showground. I can sit anyone on him and he will look after them.

Trains, motorway bridges, double deckers etc don't faze him at all.

BUT he can be scared of his own shadow or anything else if he cares to look at it hard enough and this tends to depend on his mood. He is much better away from home so I think he is bored with our local hacking and likes to check I am awake, if I want a quiet life I ride him down the A38. Keeps it interesting though and he generally doesn't do anything unseating. just can be a bit of an idiot. Same with showjumps, somedays nothing is too much trouble, other days he will find something!

My Welsh D is still a bit loopy at 18. Had him 16 years and he's never got used to loud noises, tractors etc. FANTASTIC little eventer though

My Welsh Sec D Mare was VERY bolshy/Strong/Spooky and Quirky when i first got her 10 years ago she is now 18 - still acts like a youngster and can be strong sometimes but now has manners! Still very quirky ... but i wouldn't have her any other way!

I have a Traditional (old style) Welsh Section D which has a fantastic temprement. Can be ridden by anyone.

The problem with the temprement of the new style ones is the result of breading them to be show type cobs with thin spindly legs and highly strung temprements.
 
Frank definitely doesn't have thin spindly legs, and he most definitely isn't highly strung he is the laziest thing ever most of the time. However the min a bell goes for dr or jumping he wakes up and some days he can be infuriating particularly if something in his locality is different or has moved.

he just has the character that ponies can have!

I was told by a D breeder when I lived in wales that some of these 'newer' bred horses are bred lighter and with a bigger action and also to be more showy in the ring- and he believed their temprements had worsened since he was a lad in the 50's. No idea if its true though as I dont/have never owned any Sec D's.

he is going very well and magnitude seems to be helping a lot as now when he sees something new he doesnt try to flee he will process it a little more ut saying that he is driving down the busy sea front and town centre

Mine is by Janton Meredith and has a super temprement, really laid back and kind, he is an old fashioned chunky cob, rarely seen these days and is ofetn overlooked in favour of the newer, lighter type which tend to be sharper and spooky...
 
i have 2 - one is 23 and by Maesmynach Flyer out of a mare by Llanarth Braint - built like a brick out-house, sensible to a degree, but can be pretty spooky when he wants to be. Would put my granny on him in the school, but only a few people have been allowed to ride him out as he's got hell of a 180degree spin on him. He's a bit of an argy-bargy on the ground, but suspect he wasn't taught much in the way of manners before i got him aged 14 and although he respects me he still walks through anyone else.

my new one is 7 and he's by Sydenham Elgin - both his grandsires are Llanarth Lloyd George. much lighter build, but still obviously a Cob with solid looking legs and just the right amount of feather, with a real pretty head. He's hot as they come - permanently on edge on the ground or ridden, always looking for something to spook at. Not an easy ride in the slightest, but gorgeous paces and a super jump - just gotta tame the brain!

In my dreams! Mine and Victor's friends often have a laugh about what he'd be like in harness, Ben Hur springs to mind! He'd be terrified, shame because he's got an awesome trot

well that has certainly made me chuckle thinking of him in ben hur
but i must admit the more i seem to work my little man as in a couple of hours a day the better he is
