So, today I decided I would go for a hack, in the rain.

I have to go through the cow field in order to get from the yard to the bridlepath. The cows were sheltering under the trees at the gate at the far end of the field.
I am really really frightened by cows. But I really wanted to go for the ride so I kicked on.

Got down to the bottom of the field, and one cow came up to Jimmys bottom and followed us :S I waved my whip and told it to go away. It ignored me
Then I had to go between two cows stood about 3 foot apart (no other gap available to reach the gate) I was trying to keep an eye on both cows to make sure neither would get us.
Then stood at the gate I realised I had a semicircle of cows behind me, *gulp* :S
I had to get off to get through the gate, otherwise they would sneak out before I could close it.

Got through the gate and I was shaking so much that I couldn't co-ordinate myself to get back on :| Jimmy was so good, hes not at all bothered by the cows

He then proceeded along the next bridlepath spooking at nothing lol, literally couldn't see anything he could be looking at!

He felt good today, felt like the old Jimmy was back (been having issues with him lately)

It rained lightly all the way round, that daft rain you don't really notice until your soaked!! So had to do the jobs quickly afterwards as I was soooo cold!!

Lovely story, I am trying to get my 'big brave' hacking pants on! My boy is brave with spooky objects and scared to death of nothing.... My ambition of the year is to hack him alone. Thanks for some inspiration, will try and be less fair weather xx

Hope you've warmed up by now - it's gone really cold here too. I am generally o.k. with cows being nosey but they can be intimidating sometimes especially at such close quarters. And legging it around when first turned out, Your Jimmy sounds a star and glad he is being his old self again for you. lots of riding to look forward to now in sunshine soon and warmer days - yippee.

Im really quite fair weather normally, but I go through phases where I cant be bothered riding and then suddenly I feel determined to get on with it, at which stage it always decides to be rubbish weather! Lol
good luck PP with getting out alone :)

Got home and straight in the shower, so much warmer :)
Cant wait for warmer (longer!) days :D

Sounds like you've got a fab horse there. :) I rode this afternoon in the drizzle, it was so cold! Can't wait for the weekend when the weather is meant to pick up.

My horse is obsessed with cows, if we walk past a field with them in he will purposefully stop and talk to them!

I don't mind cows when I'm the other side of a fence or on a horse but I nearly got trampled by one once so really paranoid on the ground with them. I used to happily herd them round the field to try and get my friends cow pony out though!

You need to be careful with cows, they are so curious and crowd round you, then the ones at the back push forward, scaring the ones at the front, resulting in blind panic and trampling, I had a very scary experience crossing a field with castrated bullocks in, with my old gsd and OH, they weren't in the field when we went for a walk, they were curious about the dog and crowding us, OH chased them off, but we were running from tree to tree, then had an open expanse of field to get across and cows can run faster than me, very careful in checking fields now, we lived on the farm and had permission to be there

Sometimes we have to ride with the cows on the farm, I have taught all my horses to move them on out of the way. I should add it's only ever about 15, so not many, but they often have naughty babies!!

1 was a bit scared but the first time the cows moved away from him you could see he almost did an evil laugh and you could see him realising they were scared of him!! Now if they are in his way he will try and trot at them to make them scatter!

You are braver than I, I won't ever ride through cows.
I hate them, my horse hates them even more. It is the only situation I cannot convey confidence for my horse.

You brave! I avoid cows too although Asbo cob seems to like them a lot. A yard I had a share horse at was next to a cattle farm and the farmer used to keep moving the cows around every few days so you never knew where you'd encounter the nosy things! We were always careful not to trot or canter near them in case it set them off.

These are the only cows I will go in with, my horses field is next to them so they are often talking over the fence to each other and I almost know them and what they will do, because I go through a lot, just never been with them so close. There aren't many, 10 max :) when I came back two were still by the gate and they ran away as i approached so that was easier :)
