Now that my OH's mare is loading more reliably, we have decided to get out and about, so today we decided to visit the woods we used to ride in when we rode at a local riding school.

After a quick whizz round the woods, we thought it would be interesting to walk from the woods to a nearby beach, as H and I have never ridden on a beach before. In fact, I don't think H has ever seen a beach.

We got to the beach and both the horses stopped dead, as I think the space was a bit of a shock, we then walked on, along some dunes and then out onto the sand. H immediately stopped and tried to sniff the sand, we walked on a few more paces and he stuffed his nose right into the sand and then it happened. I suddenly got a sort of sinking feeling, and realised the ground was coming up to meet me as H dropped onto his knees and then his tummy, I hopped off and H tried to roll in the sand which would have been fine, except for the very nice hand made saddle I recently got for him

I managed to get him back on his feet before he destroyed his saddle, and we carried on for the rest of our uneventful ride.

My OH said the H is a character.....well, he's certainly something :D

oops I thought you meant you were actually sinking. in fact he was just keeping you on your toes ;) First time we took our 2 blasted up the last dune.... abs at the top I think the lack of any proper horizons tends to baffle them a bit.

on last RC ride I did before pony broke my friends horse was hilarious, went all wobbly and jiggly at the sand ;) :D

yes I think it is best to call it character rather than any of the other possiblilities :D

My OH was no help, she just laughed herself silly.

Just to add to the moment, I had not realised I was only about 5 yards from a family enjoying a seaside picnic as I tapped him on the bum with my stick and said "get up you silly b*gger".

I think he would have been only too pleased to lay there and sun bathe for a while. Mind, in this heat, I can't say I blame him.

Newfies eh? :)

Eeek! Well done for saving the saddle!

We are off for a jolly to the seaside in two weeks. It will be an interesting experience I'm sure but if any of you guys on the South coast see a someone riding a small grey horse bobbing about in the sea, please call the coastguard, we're very lost :D

Will now pay close attention to signs of rolly-polys, thanks for the heads-up ;)

Fancy suggesting I laughed! I was thinking OMG the saddle!!!! Anyway the little burger raised himself with a prod of encouragement from the schooling whip - the saddle and my lovely new English leather balding girth were both fine! There could have been words........... what is it with New Forest ponies? their sense of humor is legendary :) Glad it wasn't me!

I've just got back from the beach with my NF. She loves it! Although I had intended to use the space as an area to school her for a bit first- she (and I) struggle to go onto the right canter lead so thought we could practise at the beach. Although as she's been so many times before and we have just blasted along the beach she just wasn't intrested in being schooled! Not surprising tho! She just wanted to canter and gallop.....and boy that's what we did!! Shes so fit now and soooooo much faster!!! But the beach is one of the few places I can really let her have her head and go like the clappers!! :p

And yes NF ponies certainly do have character.....and an amazing ability to give the "But I didn't do anything eyes" little monkey!
