went to view a pony- shocking!

I know of pony, and believe op, owner should not be allowed horses and has lied through teeth regarding pony, pony was sold to her as unhandleable and now she's under weight she's quiet and being sold as a first pony. Sad sad situation

By pics it looks nowhere near emaciated, but underweight. I would steer clear unless they can give you an explanation as to why.

IMO the pony is simply much older than advertised. I would also say its not emaciated just an old clipped pony. From the pics it looks in its mid twenties. Did you look at its teeth when you viewed it? I imagine they would tell a different story!

For me, I have seen much worse, although possinly in the flesh it is worse. However, I would also ask whether this pony has a virus, which would answer both the condition and the lethargy aspects fairly simply.
I had dreadful trouble keeping weight on all 6 of mine a few years ago, we had the vet and were throwing food at them like there was no tomorrow 3 round haylage bales, 2 bags of equilibra, 7 calm and condition 2 alfa beet and 3 alfa a week, and simply couldn't get weight on.
Moved to somewhere with better grazing, turfed out 24/7 and now that feed would last 2 months, and they get 1 bale of haylage a week.
Sadly there is always more than one side to the story but if she didn't feel it needed to put on any weight, I would be worried

I agree that the pictures don't seem as bad as the OP's description, but then I've spent winter battling with a poor doer......

I think the BHS are excellent in cases where it could be an issue of ignorance rather than abuse so OP I would suggest contacting them.

I wouldn't say that pony was emaciated, i'd describe it as on the poor side but it wouldn't worry me at this time of year. Ponies are supposed to come out of the winter lighter and the spring grass will furnish them beautifully very soon. If they were looking good at this time of year, you wouldn't be able to turn them out once the grass comes through

It's thin, poor and with little muscle. It looks depressed and quiet. Op report these people as this pony is not getting what it needs according to those pictures. It is thin, but not emaciated, but this does not make it ok!! I would not be happy if I went to view something and it looked like that. Did u see any of the other horses at yard? How did they look?

I've spent the winter battling 2 poor doers so this isn't as shocking as I was expecting. Pony just looks like she needs some Dr.Green, certainly not a welfare case.

I know someone whose horse is almost this thin, despite very good care and lots of food too. He's just a very poor doer. But the difference here is the owner "doesn't see the problem" according to the OP.

Someone trying to sell a mare this poor without even realising this isn't what a horse should like like, is pretty worrying imo. Even if the poor girl isn't quite thin enough to get help from the welfare organisations. :(
