Okay - since Dad passed away, we have decided to get a dog to keep us company. Mum is allergic to fur (although not so much anymore) so we have to get one that doesn't moult too much.

-Small
-Not too hairy/doesn't moult much
-good temperament
-Easy

Any suggestions?

Our innitial thought was Jack Russell however I know a lot of them moult. Then we thought os Spaniels - they will be up at the yard a lot and sister will also walk so will have lots of exercise whatever breed. Sister wants a Sheltie *rolls eyes*

Suggestions please!

Get anything from a rehoming centre!!! I would go for a poodle cross as they don't moult.

or one of those horrid hairless chinese dogs - ugh!

So sorry to hear about your dad.

I would suggest a chunky Yorkie.
We have 2 Rhodesian Ridgebacks and 2 Yorkies.
The Yorkies rule the roost at our house! People think they are grannies dogs but they are far from it!
Ours are brilliant with the horses, are totally non wimpy and have massive personalities.
They do not moult whatsoever. They do need clipping but we do them ourselves (with the small horse trimmers!)
My hubby was totally against having "little scratty dogs" but now admits they are the best idea I have had!

miniature schnauzzer (sp) don't moult and are fun. And poodles are very intelligent and fun. Also don't moult.

Spaniels moult like mad!! But they are the bestest dogs, and you already know where to get one from

We are going to see the one tomorrow, hoping he will be coming home with us! We've already got bowls, chews, toys and biscuits!! Just need a bad of food and we'll be sorted!

The problem with crossing a dog that doesn't moult with a dog that doe moult, is you cannot say that all the puppies will not moult!
50% might have lovely cocker coats that don't moult, then 50% might end up with a poodle coat that needs clipping PLUS they moult!!

I have nothing against mixed breeds, but designer breeds costing ridiculous sums of money are disgusting IMO, what happens to the poor pups when they are no longer fashionable! The rescue centres are already full of labradoodles! Sorry rant over

we have a border terrier and he is such an easy lovely friendly little dog but as hes got older(hes 12) he has started to moult more but if trimmed regualrly this usually isnt a problem!

i think its fair to say im my little dogs biggest fan, he was the perfect first dog and ive not met a bad border terrier yet!

What about a West Highland White Terrier, I've had mine since she was a pup and she is LOVELY, very sweet natured, doesn't appear to moult and was walk for as little or as much time as we like!

Not all JRs are noisy and nippy, mine only bark if someone knocks the door or makes them jump, which in my experience, most dogs do. They've never nipped, it depends on how you bring them up.

Granted JRs like ALL terriers can be a challenge but they're cracking little dogs.

Schnauzers are fav wee dogs and they don't moult

Although you do have the added costs of clipping. I have a mini schnauze and she is so much fun! A very loyal little dog, playful, cute and good with other dogs. Although mine can be a grumpy poo but she's an older lady now

Shocking...and bigger fool, for those shelling out money like this for a designer x breed

I look after a fair few bichons, they have pretty cool little characters, very clever little dogs, very playfull and loyal, but I would say, go for a little rescue or a whippet x.

How about a Cairn Terrier? Have lived next door to three of them and helped out with dogwalking and feeding, one from when he was a puppy, and they suits your description.

If you where thinking of Jack Russels, then for exampel a Cairn Terrier, Norfolk Terrier or a Schnauzer is rather similar in temperament.
Of the ones mentioned by me, and others, the Mini Schnauzers are the ones that needs the most brain-exercise.
In general, a Bichon frise or Poodle, would have easier temperament than a terrier.

If you're not into showing, then maybe a Tibetan Terrier with short-haircut?

from Sweden.

Morning flower - hope you and your family are ok.

Have you thought about a lovely little Staffie?

And This one apparently needs a new home.........

Patterdale Terriers are great fun!

Our rough coated ones don't seem to moult a lot, they just need hand stripping twice a year! We do ours ourselves but you can take them to a dog grooming place!

They are very active and full of energy but they are great for cuddles on your lap. I have no doubt they would keep up with you if you chose to take them out riding!!

One of our pups has gone to a home that the guy does a lot of training, and he has got his Kennel club good citizen silver award and he will wait for 2mins, he's now started agility with him as he is 18months old now, so if you put the time in they are very trainable!! Oh and they will keep any rats you may have at the yard well under control!!
We are just about to breed our stud dog (black rough coat) to our chocolate smooth coat bitch so we are hoping for some Chcolate rough coat pups, they will be really cute!!

This is our first homebred Fudge

Patterdale fan here too! Our little man is a super chap - he is rough (ish) coated and doesn't really moult at all really - just the occasional little clump is noticeable on the carpet. He is great fun and just the most delightful dog to have around. Our daughter was 6 when we got him and he has been perfect with her.

Good luck with your search
