If they are the international governing body, they can change the rules as they see fit, along as they comply with their own internal "due process". Courts should not be allowed to interfere in sport.
To be honest Halloween, if they changed them with due process I would agree but this summary changing of mines with complete disregard for the trouble being caused while they do cant really be allowed, can it? it would set a rather dangerous preceedence i think.
Look at it from a football point of view. all the teams in the premiership and championship know in advance how many will be relegated and promoted and the rules are clear as to how this will be achieved. Suppose at the season end it was liverpool arsenal and man united who were in a relegation position, two on a tie, and the FA suddenly decided not to relegate them after all cos it was not economically sound (would lose sponsors etc without the big 3). And after all Accrington Stanley, due for promotion will only go straight back down again next season anyway......
Then a month later they change their mind again and say actually we have decided the league is bigger than any club and down you go, hello accrington and preston north end but dont get excited next year we are going to relegate four teams as we only wanted 12 (or whatever) in the premiership anyway.
can you see what i am getting at now? seems to me they do need an independent body to sort it out.
If the FA wanted to change the rules at the end of the season, that is their perogative. If the teams don't like it, they can go and form their own independent league.
I am afaid Halloween that they wouldnt and couldnt. Not without giving notice of intended changes so that those affected by the rule changes could appeal. there are very few organisations in any sphere run on the sort of tryanical monopoly you are suggesting.
In these days of litigation to think you can proceed with changes in rules or laws that affect lots of lives without giving notice or consulting the parties involved is ludicrous, those days are long long gone. Why on earth in this case should Belgium or GB just sit there and take it? The FEI is supposed to look after the best interests of international equestrian sport, that is ALL sports and nations affiliated to them.
I would go as far as to suggest that if they cannot fulfil their mandate they should resign and get in some one who can.
The international federation of another sport that I follow bases itself in Switzerland so that is almost immune from legal action. They also have an unwritten rule that if any competitor sues them, they suspend their competition licence. You might win your legal case, but by the time it has progressed through the Swiss courts, your career will be over as you will be too old to compete.
Its not fair, but its their sport and their rules and if you want to compete, you have to toe the line. In their place, I would be inclined to do the same as I would not want competitors or national federations challenging my authority.
and as a competitor or owner i would not want to be involved in any sport where a tiny minority ruled in arbitary fashion over the minority without fear of recrimination.
and showjumnping is not the 'FEI's sport' as it happens. the FEI was formed by the nati onal federations to adminster growing (at the time) competition. if anything the various disciplines and national federations own it. which is why so many nationas are involved in it, like FIFA to name another. it is supposed to oversee cases like the super league to make sure they are fair and the rules equally applied to all nations. if they cannot do this no wonder they are taken to court, they have failed to do a job for which they are essentially paid, by various affiliation fees or whatever.
I agree it wont hurt to go down for a year.
But we need to make sure we go back up again the year after.
So is it not time we had a new team managment, the current chef d' equipe has been pathetic in all respects, he has been unable to gain respect from the riders and incapable of making decisions on his own. He has not been a voice for British Showjumping.
Any one got any ideas for a replacment???
It would be good to try out a foreign chef. Anyone who is a good motivator and a team player. PS would be good to steady the ship but we couldn't afford him.
I actually think someone out of showjumping would be good. There are many really strong inspirational people in other areas and it would take away the cries of nepotism.
The riders themselves will know all the technicalities so I don't see why a showjumping background is needed. The right person will instill a desire to focus and win in whatever area they are working in and so imo it doesn't matter what they're background subject is. I also think SJing could do with an image revamp and less grey men can only be a good thing.
Funnily enough I don't share your recommendation of Katie Price
Someone like Kevin Keegan, has managed at the highest level and i think he has an interest in horses and about to make a few million out of Newcastle.
I'd offer but I think I would be to much of a culture shock!!
What's wrong with katie, she would generate publicity, have our riders wearing pink and if all else fails, she could get her threepenny bits out to put off the opposition (well some of them

LOL - So the only way we're gonna win anything is to put off the opposition then eh as opposed to being decent SJer's. I cannot imagine Geoff, Tim etc in pink - it is just too painfull.
Will be interesting to see how she'd motivate the team though, especially if the likes of Tina Flatcher, Laura Renwick etc step up a rung. Am not sure prominent baps would do it for them.
