Took mare to do her second novice today. She was absolutely fantastic - was one of those days where the result doesn't reflect how good the horse was, but that is eventing!

Did dressage at 8.06am - still half asleep! Very pleased with her test, scored 34.8 - really pleased as her medium canter was far more contained than I expected!

Onto showjumping - was definitely up to height and seemed to be causing a lot of trouble. She actually jumped the best she ever has - really felt like a proper jumper - but had 3 down! Not really her fault just touched them and they came down! Very unlucky really! Was actually a nice round!

XC was not the biggest novice I've seen, but had a few techincal fences - was awesome again and jumped clear

, all the straight routes including big hedge to pimple which always causes trouble (lec if it makes you feel better 2 people in my section alone were eliminated at that fence for jumping alternative backwards!!!!), bank to arrowhead and bounce which I was quite worried about as she's never really done proper bounces but she was perfect through it!

Felt the best she ever has, had 12 time penalties as no point running her legs off when I'd had 3 fences down and she goes to Gatcombe on Friday!

Overall, very pleased with ponio!

How did all other HHO'ers get on this weekend? Not seen many reports...!

Saw you when you were stood at the score board chatting with her owner (I was getting my number) Then saw you warm-up/start xc as I was warming up for dr and heard the commentry during my test, they were very complimentary!

Ah right - wish I'd known I'd have looked out for you!

She was so cool - very frustrating about the show jumps, although saw friend there and he reckons he can fix her so I'm taking her up to him on Wednesday evening and he's going to give me a bit of help. She's now very good in front but touches them behind occasionally and thats what happened today!

Hit fence before bounce quite hard and she's got a big of an egg on her knee - hope it settles before Gatcombe. I think she'll be ok - I've put cold boots on and arnica and she was sound when we got home so fingers crossed!

What day are you at Gatcombe?

Loads were hitting it, it was deceivingly upright I thought. Hope the lump comes down.
If they put section lists up then I'd know what days I'm there!!!! Prob all 3 tbh as may well have Friday dressage and all the CIC jumping is on Sunday.
Ridiculous!!

It would help us all if we got section lists soon!

That is fairly ridiculous! I'll be there Friday competing and will probably go Sat or Sun for a wander round as OH working all weekend.

It was deceivingly upright, some flowers or something would have helped give the horses something to look at and jump it better - also didn't think bounce as second last fence was the most sensible...! Hitting that fence certainly sharpened her up though as didn't touch the bounce at all! Jumped it very well! I was amazed!

well done, best of luck for Gatcombe

eventy mate came 4th in one of the intros on horse's second run - nice end to a naff season for him

Well done Mel, sounds like shes coming on really well. Im sure the show jumping can be sorted, afterall shes still young.
I did the intro yesterday and came 7th. I got a 26.3 dress, one down sj and 4 time XC due to taking a long route. So all in all a good weekend for everyone.

Aww fantastic!!

Your girlie is just getting better and better - real shame about the show jumping - but hey at least she's enjoying herself and wanting to do the job

Fantastic result, well done! What you doing at Gatcombe?

Thanks! Doing novice on Friday at Gatcombe.

Makes my intro report seem a bit boring.
Can sympathise re the SJ though, my mare can jump really well and just touch 2 or 3 off behind.
Well done!!

Mel, just a thought - do you SJ with hind boots on? Mine can be really lazy behind, but is much better without any boots on in the SJ.

I don't use hind boots, only open fronted tendon boots. Good thought though - thank you!

Me too! Oh well, it's worth a try. I have no more useful ideas though, I just got so frustrated with mine I took the damn things off as I was working on the theory that if he was going to hit them he deserved to feel it as he doesn't lack scope, he is just very hot on conserving as much energy as possible....

Try her in back boots? Usually (for normal horses

) back boots make them pick up behind a bit better, especially if you put them on fairly tight.

Ahem missus, are you saying my horse is *special*?! What with his special signs and his abnormal reaction to boots, if he could be arsed he'd get a complex!

I can't see that she'd be any better with hind boots - just wouldn't hurt when she hit the fences!!!!

Oh well, will have to see what happens when have a jump on Wednesday and the see what happens at Gatcombe!

MIght work - I did a lot of boot experimenting at Dorset show BSJA (2 classes a day for 3 days so easy to try different things) and discovered I needed no back boots an v tight front tendon boots. Oh, and bogger fences!!

If you've got a horse that is a bit careless behind (ie an *eventer*) stick some backs boots on it done up tight, it does usually work.

SC are you saying that your horse isn't special?

I'll give it a go then! Worth a try! Along with fluffy nosebands which have also been suggested! Going to be lots of tack changing on Wednesday!
