Just returned from a weeks "working" holiday in Spain (Near Malaga). Had a really good time, eleven horses, all Andalucian and 2 qtr horses, had to ride in Western Tack for a week - the saddles are like dinner trays and my legs must have grown 4 inches!
The guy that owns the ranch trained his horses to stop at any gait with "whoa" - bit of a suprise on my first canter! - the pommel kept me just in the saddle (but slightly bruised!) He was very strict with his horses and if they did something wrong in the stable used to chain them up for 4-6 hrs to think about things? Am I soft or is this a bit too harsh?
I consider myself firm but fair with my horses - especially the second one, after learning the hard lesson with the first and thoughrally spoiling him for a year
What do others think? They were chained up with a thick chain 2 ft long (no bailing twine) and could not feed etc for this time - sometimes after having a few stern cracks with the whip/hand depending upon severity of naughtyness?
