I know i have asked this before but now the hassel of Christmas is over I am now in a position to buy a western pad, just some advice on some would be good, or are they much the same
I have bought 3 different ones since getting my western saddle!
The first one came with the saddle and was a a thick pad with a sheepskin type underneath and patterned above. However my horse had quite high withers so I bought one that was very much the same except it was cut away at the withers - big mistake!! It just pressed down on him behind the withers instead of on the withers!
Anyway the last one I bought is a high withered one, still thick with sheepskin style underneath but shaped over the withers.
That one fitted perfectly!
They are lovely and comfy but a b*gg*r to clean! I have to put mine in the bath (when my OH is out or he'd kill me!).
I bought the last pad from a western store online but can't remember which one as it was a long time ago now! If I remember, I'll let you know!
I do remember it was about £50 but as I say, it was about 4 years ago.
new to western,i have just ordered a cheap tuffy pad(£15) from robinsons which i plan to use with cotton numnah underneath so that i can wash regulary or may use a poplypad under it,i have to see how it goes.
Best to go for the proper sheepskin pad they last for years and are good quality. Best way of cleaning them is with a pressure washer, I usually do mine straight after I have ridden the day before my horses day off so it gets a full 48hours to dry, I put mine over the radiator in the kitchen, and it is dry by the time I next ride.
Oh lovely hum of horse coming from the radiator them
I'd buy a Professionals choice air ride pad if you were planning to do long hours. However they are a bugger to get hold of and expensive to ship from the USA.
Yes, professionals choice is the best - you can get ones for horses with high withers - think they're called orthosport
They are expensive but well worth it - smart enough to show in and help keep the saddle stable.
Western Scene sell them in the UK, as do Arizonas.
If they're really out of your price range, Reinsman do good synthetic sheepskin pads, which are felt filled/blanket topped.
Again - western scene or Janet Western.
Agree with Cazza on the pressure washer - but find its better to dry them naturally. Can take a couple of days, so best done when your horse is on holiday!
