Western pleasure, anyone? (video)

Where to start,

Spot the lame horse(s)
How times do you need to pull on the curb
How many are ridden in rolker
How many look happy

How on earth - why on earth - am i from some bizzare race? what with this and the arab handling, and the soring of the poor tennasse walking horses, having to try and get a pertition to have cctv in slaughter houses to stop abuse.....

I dont want to be a human any more.

I had to stop watching when I saw the horse that looked on 3 legs a couple of mins in - if that were one of mine i would have been off its back looking for a vet or back person.

Ok - lets wait and see how this one is defended then.

I subscribe to a western magazine, and there was an article published which said that a Western Pleasure horse "would look lame" at the canter, (although it isn't) and I thought "Why make a horse do something where to a bystander it looks lame?" Crazy.

I was watching a very well known and successful western horse and I said that if my horse moved like that I would be worried............

It's the draw reins on the curb bit that do my head in. The yank-yank-yank isn't so great either. Overall, it's a horrible display of what western pleasure should be.
Yes and despite what is being said about judging by the powers that be to have the horses more forward going the staggering slow peanut
roling lame looking ones are still getting placed , what the class is suposed to be is a horse that is a pleasure to ride the horse you would pick for a ride into town or for a trail ride with your best friend not this mess, and it seems the trainers regulaly use harsh and abusive methods to achive this ugly movement ive watched some of the leading competiors over here!!! seems what you have to do is when your getting ready for the class the second the horse starts to go forward and stops hobling along and picks its feet up you have to give it an almighty sock in the teeth !!!!

Really gets my blood boiling! That bunch of you know whats wanna try sit on a horse that is not scared to move forward for a change! Bloomin t&&@£)!
And that lot have the cheek to comment on English style!
Rant over

Class description, Pleasure A good pleasure horse has a flowing stride of a reasonable length in keeping with its comfomation, should cover ground with little effort , should be shown on a loose rein but still have light contact and control, should be responsive yet smooth in transitions when called for, maximum credit should be given to the flowing ballanced and willing horse which gives the apeareance of being fit and a pleasure to ride..

I ride western as do many of my friends and have attended several western shows, I have NEVER seen riding like that or horses that look so down trodden and miserable! Unfortunately in life there always those that give something a bad name, I'm sure we could just as easily find a video clip showing a similarly horrific example of english riders but that doesn't mean english riding is bad, wrong or shouldn't be given the credit it's due when done properly. Yes the horses are required to move at a different pace to those competing in english shows but they should still be happy and comfortable, a pleasure horse should be a horse you could spend a day in the saddle on but should be happy to have you up there for the day too!
Please don't judge all western horses and riders by this shoddy example! I know lots of happy, healthy and very much loved horses that are ridden and competed western style.

I agree, don't ride western or anything but when in Canada saw some horses being ridden beautifully, not at all like that vid.

I have a lovely western pleasure horse and both my daughter and I have competed on him and he is such a fab horse to ride, he is very laid back but does have the occasional high spirits! He prefers to go on a long rein with a very light contact, is fabulous at going over trail obstacles, does flying lead changes on a loose rein! and is great out hacking too. See him in action here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzxHfTNiUdk&feature=related this summer with my daughter in a fun class.
