Western Riders: Quick head count out of curiousity!

We tried to get one but apparently then we would need to have a sub forum for Dressage, XC, Eventing et all so unfortunately the Computer says no!

Was also a request for a sticky thread on NL but no reaction to that either.

I guess the only answer is to keep bringing this thread up if you want to ask Western questions, or scare the normal peeps with pictures of shank bits and spurs)))

Possibly used to not being ridden on the rail all the time.

I just saw that, what an odd supposition... the poster wouldn't have wanted to see John Lyons' demo horse at one of his WEG clinics demonstrating collection with no saddle, no bridle, no halter AND no rider, then - now that WAS impressive!!

My 5 year old was started in a snaffle and it is only now a year later and after he has learnt self carriage that he is being put into a baby shank bit to finish him......I by the way will not be allowed to ride him in the shank until I have perfected how to use it on a totally finished schoolmaster.

As for being soft supple and very straight yep they train them like that I come from a Dressage background and I had my old friend who breaks, trains and teaches dressage over for a weekend....My western trainer bet her he could go out and compete Novice level right now. she hopped up and completed a Novice level test on him with only an hours practice.....horse never been trained english remember....my trainer won 100 euro from that bet)

I attended a British Appaloosa western open day this last weekend. The weather was atrocious but there was a western tack trade stand and a western instructor and they both did a great job of promoting western, essentially for the appaloosa enthusiast, just sad the weather may have put people off attending this useful event. The friend that I took who is an 'English' person through and through was making positive remarks on the way home that made me smile secretly to myself!!! Watch this space.

hiya, i and my daughter have been riding western for around 10 years now. we started with a super arabian and then bought our first quarter horse who we had for about 7 years, then another qh mare, then a foal, then another gelding who is fab. i get to ride him when my daughter is at uni and i hope to compete him next year. he is also a great hack too.

I think you may find it easier to try western on a horse already trained to do western. Don't know where you are but the Mendip Stud in Somerset offer western riding, google them as don't have their site to hand. There are also ads for western stuff in the Western Horse UK magazine for sale in all good newsagents (out bi-monthly), this may give you some help and inspiration. Good luck

if you are in the midlands there are lots of people teaching western, david deptford at sovereign quarter horses nr march cambs, lucy adams at unique quarter horses in lincs, lee rutter at oakridge quarter horses in notts and shane borland at borland quarter horses in warwicks. all have websites so if you google them you will find them.
