Just wondering if anyone knew of any good places for western riding lessons in the UK? Preferably towards the North West!

A long time ago I decided that I would try western, side saddle, and even driving (one day!) and I have ridden 'western' on holiday, but not had a chance to actually try anything as far as the liked of sliding stops etc. Which I understand you might not be able to learn immediately but that's the point of lessons?

Doubt it'd be something I'd take up full time but would be nice to go for a day or weekend and have 2-3 lessons somewhere for a fun short 'holiday' as such! :) If I enjoyed it, who knows!? But it is definitely something I'd love to try *properly* as such this year!!

Thanks,
Sol x.

Hi there. If you are prepared to travel a bit, there's a lot of people around the country who can help you learn Western.

There are a number of cross-discipline Western riding instructors of varying levels of experience around the UK and your best source for that would be look at the Western Equestrian Society website www.wes-uk.com . The majority require you to have your own horse, but some instructors do have lessons horses (eg Bruce Lawrence at Malvern, Worcs, David Deptford in Cambs, Mendip Stud in Somerset).

If you are particularly interested in learning about Reining and the reining manoeuvres like the sliding stop, roll back and spins, you'd be best placed to look at the British Reining website and book a lesson at a dedicated centre which has both lessons horses and the right sort of surface to rein on. These are limited but growing! Lee Rutter at Oakridge Quarter Horses in Notts, Shane Borland at Borland Quarter Horses in Warwickshire, David Deptford at Sovereign Quarter Horses in March, Cambs, Mendip Stud, are all able to offer lessons on trained reiners and have the right facilities to really get a feel for that discipline. There are also a growing number of UKCC reining coaches around the country, some are listed on the British Reining website.

Right on your doorstep:

Cheshire: Scherie Dermody – Tel. 01270 780620.
West View Paddock, Broomhall Green, Nantwich, Cheshire, CW5 8DA

Pretty sure this lady will be able to help you. Have not used her personally (I am down south) but a lady that I sold a youngster to (also in Cheshire) has lessons with her. She is also a western judge.

Mendip Stud has already been mentioned I noticed, but they really do their very best to encourage western riding from lessons to shows to selling you a quarter horse (or appaloosa) also stallions at stud if you wish to breed your own western horse of the future.
